Mutterings of "die" and "go home"

Postby Catoneinutica » Sat Mar 14, 2009 6:21 pm

Debito has a blog entry today linking to another blog, that of an American living in Japan:

http://kbyanc.blogspot.com/2009/03/racism-in-japan.html

The guy is saying that he gets comments like "die" and "go home" on a regular basis. He certainly looks non-threatening in the little photo on his blog; I can't imagine why he apparently provokes such animus from the J-tribers. Any ideas?

-catone
-I've certainly never had such experiences - it's possible that a couple of oyaji over the years have, uh, expectorated in front of me because of my gainjin-osity, but then again maybe they were just clearing their throats.

I am largely paranoid I suppose, but I feel like I get a lot of glares and threatening looks. Maybe a lot of Takechans live near me.

Ya know, I'd get looks and stares, but I'd just stare right back and if they kept looking, I'd frown and tilt my head and shift my body to face them.

They usually quickly found something else to do.

Anecdotally, I'm puzzled by his post as I can count on one hand (and have fingers left over) the number of negative incidents I've experienced in Japan
over the course of a decade.

In my own experience, the attitude of random Japanese seems to be one of benign indifference.

However, almost all of my time has been spent in Kansai and Chubu.
Don't know if that is a relevant factor.

Yeah sure i get the occasional stare for older people who look at me like its 1953, even had some bleached haired tough looking guy walk up on me, but i just kept walking because i am not going to get deported because some jackass has a problem with foreigners.

But little kids really like me, i think it might be the blue eyes and blond hair that make me look like i am super saiyan or a final fantasy main character. They love to play peekaboo and smile and wave, junior high schoolers love to say "harro" and senior high school girls love to giggle and try to talk to me, but the boys are weird, some of them are cool and some see me as a threat or just trying to act tough around me. I just shrug it off and play it cool, i would never run the risk of doing something stupid to lose my job.
I am not really sure where I am going, I just hope that when I get there, I can sit down because I am sure my feet will be tired.

Ten years, only got the "go home" once, from some old drunk guy. I closed my eyes and starting saying "Akuma...akuma...no...konya dame...no...akuma". He moved away soooo fast, especially for an old guy. Come to think of it, everyone moved away, so I could sit down. Bonus, ne.

No one wants to fuck with someone who appears crazier than they are.

Although I recognize part of what you are saying, probably you and Kelly Yancey have schizophrenia.

But even I too, who have scar face and bald head, am often glared at by some J-douches who often appear in home center after evening because they are afraid of me.
Generally Japanese, as you know, are extraordinarily coward and cannot behave loosely and flexibily, so they timidly and hesitantly escape or complete-conversely bluff like timid dogs when they face something scary like you gaijins.

Come on, just admit it. You are the very gaijin otaku you claim to despise. You hate yourself. Is that a form of schizophrenia? Is making things up a form of it? A disassociation from reality?

Actually, I've come to believe that Takechan is someone else on this site. Two accounts for the Jeckyll and Hyde that exists in him from being the redheaded stepchild locked in the basement for many years. Perhaps, when Take displays sympathy, even feels akin to gaijin, he is showing yet another personality. Ritualistic satanic abuse can cause Takechan-ian symptoms. I know a lot about it, although, I'm the one usually inflicting it upon others.

I've only had one guy tell me to go home, and it was a pretty fucked up experience overall. After we crossed words he decided he was going to try to let the air out of one of the front tires of my car (that I was sitting in, with the engine running). Turn wheels, drive forward. Don't think I have ever seen someone move so fast . Weird, weird experience.

Otherwise though I haven't had much in the way of negative experiences here. Mostly indifference, occasionally "reverse discrimination" where I get (or have gotten away with) things that a J-national wouldn't have.

poor take, is he really a victim of DID? His other personalities must be really smart to know to proxy every time they post, unless it is a mod or all the mods are one person... Does this site even track IP addresses? can hikari lines be easily traced?.... fuck I'm gettin' confused.

I run into the FG situation about once a year. I posted this years in another thread. Yes people do look at you on the train, but nothing like the stares you get in the rougher areas in the US. Back home if you stare back, you loose your wallet (I have had over 10 license reissues in the past 15 years, NEVER CARRY CASH IN A US CITY!!). Here if you stare back the other person runs away, soooooooooo much fun.

Been here around 40 years and have had direct anti-FG confrontations maybe 3 or 4 times, mostly in the early years. I think that sort of thing happens more when you're younger and perhaps more threatening.

I have been ignored or avoided on other occasions (not that many), but those don't count as "confrontations." I don't give a shit if someone want to sit next to me on the train or not.

On the other hand, I do get VERY pissed off when trying to work out a difference of opinion with a J-person on *any* subject (and in their own language), and they use the underhanded tactic of claiming that I can't see their viewpoint because I'm not Japanese as soon it becomes apparent that they' can't win any other way. That happens more than I would like it to.

But in terms of random confrontations, my guess is that anyone who claims frequent racial abuse here is either paranoid/deluded, or behaving in an arrogant or insensitive manner and probably deserves it.

Above that, Japanese grasp their own figures by only comparing with others and cannot relativize the exists(or eyes) of others inside their brain because of the fact that they have no monotheism.

So Japs always turn their faces away when coming across something dreadful like you gaijins.

What does this mean, Take? You work or hang out at home centers in the evening? Actually, I've learned some pretty useful info from you, including the observation that Tansoku Tribe (tm) members tend to view with suspicion any guy who's not at work during weekdays - and that's about the only time I seem to get paranoid glares from old bags, when I'm taking the dog for a walk at lunchtime.

But really, paranoid glares are just ambient noise; I just can't believe that the J-folks Mr. Yancy finds himself around are malevolent enough to mutter dark imprecations.

-best all-around response to any Japanese who would importune you: a Gallic shrug. It seems to make them feel like the fools that they are.

i've experienced very, very little overt, threatening racism out here in shimane and by far my experience has been very positive. the worst i've experienced is some stupid old drunk fuck while travelling home from canada with a group of my students. posted about it in another thread here which i'll dig up and add to this post in an edit.
