fish names

Postby katakori » Fri Jul 04, 2003 11:26 am

i'm confused about "trout salmon"...
in my local supermarket i see a lot of trout salmon in sashimi form, some salmon in pieces for cooking, and smoked salmon. but no sashimi salmon...
:?: :?:
is "trout salmon" a type of salmon in japan? or is it like because it comes from the atlantic (and therefore is from a different species from the pacific japanese one)? i'm a bit lost here... what do we eat in sushi bars?

any fish specialist?

I'm not a marine zoologist but I think when it comes to the Pacific rim, a "rainbow trout" and a "salmon" are basically the same thing. Or perhaps more accurately, a rainbow trout is a type of salmon. There are five other salmon types in the Pacific region.

I think technically a rainbow trout should be called a steelhead once it has been to the ocean. They return to rivers to spawn, but unlike other salmon, they don't necessarily die. They can go back out to sea.

Maybe the different terminolgy being used is an attempt to differenciate steelhead/rainbow-trout type salmon from something like the pink salmon.

As I mentioned above, there are five types of Pacific salmon. Pacific area rainbow trout(steelhead) is usually considered the sixth type. So yes, rainbow trout is diffenent from "salmon" if by "salmon" you mean "pink salmon" "chinook salmon" "chum salmon" etc. But they are all Oncorhynchus. (other trout are not orcorhynchus and that's why rainbow trout isn't really a trout, but a salmon).

That's the charm of my MT/pyshic translations...worthy of the Rob Pongi's English Lesson prize.

The key point is that "Trout Salmon" is that it's "light" can* be eaten raw but traditional SHAKE/Salmon is heavily salted and is thought as "heavy" by the Japanese.

* salmon has a high probability of having parasites ... occurred from the consumption of sushi involved salmon.

Yes. I see now that sea-run rainbow trout are called "steelheads" ---the same species. The term "Salmon Trout" has come to mean saltwater kind and "rainbow trout" has come to mean solely fresh water fish.

It turns out the Scots use the term "Salmon Trout" so it not Japanese-EngRish at all. The official Japanese name in English is "Salmon-trout sujiko".

I don't know about "trout salmon", but "salmon trout" are "lake trout", or so I have been told.
