Obviously what we need is another Nagoya thread

Postby Steve Bildermann » Tue Sep 07, 2004 7:00 am

NAGOYA — This city located in central Japan, which has traditionally kept a low profile and been known for its rather conservative nature, is starting to enjoy robust economic growth and see its products and local styles become trend-setters.

This area, geographically sandwiched between Tokyo and Osaka, has recently been thriving and the expansion has been led by major manufacturers such as Toyota Motor Corp.

Though the region has often been ignored by domestic and foreign investors, local governments are eager to attract more capital with two major projects in 2005 — the opening of Chubu Centrair International Airport near Nagoya next February and the 2005 World Exposition in Aichi Prefecture that begins next March.

On the fashion front, the refined "Nagoya lady" is getting popular. Many women's magazines have featured articles on her outfits and hairstyles.

A typical "Nagoya lady" is well-dressed, carries luxury handbags and has her hair curled at shoulder length. The distinct hairstyle is called "Nagoya roll," and even a doll with the curly tresses has hit the market.

Oddly enough, my beautician friend tells me this particular Nagoya bijin has extentions. 8O My friend pointed out that her hair is a different color starting just above the curl. I figured it was just from two different coloring jobs, but she disagreed...and hell, she's the pro.

Actually, the week I spent in Nagoya was pretty enjoyable. I met some interesting people, and had a drink ring-side at the Japanese Pro-Wrestler training gym/cafe. 8)

I've seen Nagoya-jo and Atsuta-jingu, so I doubt I'd go back just for sightseeing, but I may go back for the Expo if I'm still around.

I just ran into some Japanese who were in New London for the International Children's Conference on the environment. I saw a guy who had the Expo 2005 furry creatures logo on a pin and asked him "Aichi?" He told me he was from Toyota-shi and offered me his pin. Expo 2005 pin getto!

I love Nagoya and can't wait to return. I recommend Koshoji temple south of Nanzan in Yagoto as a marvelous place of peace in the big city.

Speaking of that furry creature check aronzi aronzo's website.
Its the designer's team behind the expo 2005 characters, they're also doing a lot of children's books.

Slander, slander, slander. Nagoya was already razed by firebombs in 1945. Think of this as Nagoya 2.0.
Nagoya as sprawl? Never been to Tokyo I take it! I think it's compact and walkable compared to other Japanese mega-cities. I like Sakae and Osu Kannon as fun centers.

Try the Lazy Lizard gaijin bar in Yagoto for a decent place to drink with cheap food. I think it still exists, but I'm a bit out of date.

I agree. I was there for a few days for the first time in April, to visit some friends, and found it a comfortable size. The castle and grounds are very impressive but if you're even half interested in cars, the Toyota Car Museum is brilliant. Interactive displays, moving models and explanations for all aspects of car manufacture. I went on a week day and it felt like I had the place to myself, except for the small army of uniformed girls manning the place.

I think Yokkaichi would be a wonderful location for a museum of industrial haze. :P

I went there to get a whiff of "Yokkaichi asthma" myself. I actually have a cool picture of the pollution I will post at some point. It was much worse 40 years ago, alas.
