TAIPEI (Kyodo) -- Two Taiwan newspapers on Tuesday ran advertisements paid for by grateful Japanese citizens thanking the Taiwanese people for their support in the wake of the March 11 earthquake and tsunami disaster in Japan.
The half-page ads placed in the Chinese-language Liberty Times and United Daily say "Arigato, Taiwan" underneath illustrations of a red plum blossom, the national flower of Taiwan, next to a pink Japanese cherry blossom.
Advert was non-governmental and Individual Japanese donated to an organization to pay for the ad because the Japanese government did not.

I do think it's pretty cool that some citizens took up the slack with those newspaper ads though.

After Nixon's visit to China and the ROC's replacement in the UN with the PRC, countries were pressured around the world to close (or rename) their embassies in Taiwan, and the ROC changed the official name of their embassies to "business and cultural exchange centers" in many foreign countries.
So expecting Japan to buck the overwhelming international trend over the last 40 years concerning Taiwanese independence is a bit much. I'm sure the individuals that posted the thank you letter to Taiwan received back-channel assistance from the Japanese foreign ministry.
