Yes, but the English also were the first to have the idea that slavery was wrong, and eventually the idea gained enough momentum to end it in the Empire, and finally in most of the world. That's a pretty big contribution to humanity. Japan's would be...sushi?

That's not really true about the British, and the Japanese banned slavery more than 200 years earlier than the perfidious Albions. Even if you had been right, Britain's Imperial heyday came after it abolished slavery, creating an exploitative economic dependency whose effects are still felt in many ways today, so it's even more insidious than slavery in some ways.

Yeah, those crazy Athenians started it, and some pope or another back in the 9th century got the ball rolling as well. Western Europe was where the snowball effect happened. The Chinese tried their hat at it once or twice before the Japanese copied another one of their ideas. I think the real push to end slavery coincided with the heyday of the British Empire, which was how they shut it down in the colonies, and started demanding other nations do the same in theirs. They even squeezed the Ottoman Empire to make a go of ending the practice.

Well they banned enslavement of Japanese people true enough. But that's not quite the same thing - as subsequent events proved.
It is a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing.
