[floatr]Image[/floatr]Asahi: Secret police confession guide leaked
A disturbing manual on how to extract confessions is the latest damning police secret leaked from the personal computer of an Ehime prefectural police inspector. "Keep the suspect in the interrogation room from morning till night if he denies the allegations," it said. "Weaken the suspect. To do so, investigators must nurture mental and physical toughness in their daily life." The revelation came at Wednesday's Lower House judicial affairs committee session... The Ehime manual is apparently for training detectives. "You may have the desire to leave the room if you get the impression that what the suspect says is right, or if the interrogation hits a snag," it said. "But you'd be a loser if you left then." The National Police Agency has denied it was aware such manuals had been officially created by it or prefectural police departments...more...

A couple of years ago there was a big scandal down here when the police down in Uwajima got nailed for arresting and sending a guy to trial after a false confession, only to arrest to actual perpetrator about six month latter, so I guess they still haven't learned.
