Abraham Lincoln was in the army in Japan from October 1953 through April 1956. Firstly stationed in Hokkaido near Sapporo and later near Sendai. He took hundreds of photographs while he was there which he later scanned and put up on a fascinating website. He also gave digital copies to the mayor of Sendai who promptly arranged an exhibition because a number of them were in colour which was a rare commodity for local photographers at the time. Lincoln then went on to set up Sendai-shi which has not only a selection of his own pictures but dozens of others from military personnel who were stationed in the same camps from 1945-55. Some of these photographers also used colour film which makes the site a unique record of the time.
