Hirano Kazuki attacks biologist Rupert Sheldrake in New Mexico

Postby gkanai » Thu Apr 10, 2008 6:54 pm

Some crazy Japanese guy attacked a prominent biologist at a speaking engagement.

Santa Fe police arrest man in attack at lecture (Las Cruces Sun-News)

Hirano Kazuki, 33, of Yokohama, Japan, was arrested Wednesday on charges of aggravated battery and assault with intent to commit a violent felony in the stabbing of Rupert Sheldrake. He did not resist as officers led him in handcuffs from the hotel that was headquarters for the 10th International Conference on Science and Consciousness.

Biologist Rupert Sheldrake stabbed at lecture (Boing Boing)

Suddenly I felt a violent blow on my left thigh, as if I had been punched. It was totally unexpected, and I did not see my assailant run towards me. He was rapidly pulled away. I looked down at my leg, and to my astonishment saw the handle of a dagger sticking out of my trousers. Without thinking, I pulled it out: the blade of the bloodstained weapon was about five inches long and an inch wide. I felt my trouser leg was wet with blood, and I pulled my trousers down.

This is rare case.
Probably crime rate of Japanese nationals living or traveling abroad is lowest among the other countries' naitonals living or traveling abroad.

what is it with japanese people attacking these semi-obscure new wave scientists/theologians?
i remember that attack on peter barakan had religious overtones to it (a peace meeting at a quaker house), although i dont think the real motive was ever found in that case..

i had no idea who rupert sheldrake is, but a quick wiki search turned this up:
Rupert Sheldrake, Ph. D (born 28 June 1942) is a British biologist and author. Drawing on the work of French philosopher Henri Bergson to develop the theory of morphic resonance, which makes use of the older notion of morphogenetic fields, he has researched and written on topics such as animal and plant development and behaviour, telepathy, perception and metaphysics. Some mainstream scientists have dismissed his work as pseudoscience.

and apparently he does work with this other guy mattew fox:
Matthew Fox (born 1940) is an American priest and theologian. He is an exponent of Creation Spirituality, a movement grounded in the mystical philosophies of medieval visionaries Hildegard of Bingen, Thomas Aquinas, Meister Eckhart and Nicholas of Cusa.

so, what do you think it was about telepathy and psychic phenomenon that upset this thirty-three year old so much?

I think the overseas activities of the Yakuza alone would almost certainly mean that you are wrong. There are plenty of nations without an international organized crime group of such dimensions. Not many had a terrorist group like the Red Army either.

Remember also that the Japanese Ministry of Justice counts visa violations as a criminal offence. It's only anecdotal, but I personally know more Japanese who have been deported from Europe than foreigners from Japan. The current tally is 4 vs 2. Japanese students are well-known in the UK for working illegally while on a student visa.

The owner of a serviced apartment block I use in Tokyo sat down and had a chat with me when he learned I was from the UK. He reminisced about the wonderful time he had in London and how he had set up a successful business delivering lunchtime bentos. I asked him why he left and he said he had to leave in a hurry because he was about to be arrested for tax avoidance.

Apparently he telepathically transmitted his desire to be stabbed and become a famous victim.

No idea, but I read a book by him and Terrence McKenna once. McKenna claimed that magic mushrooms are actually aliens who communicate with us through psychedelic experiences. Somehow Rupert Sheldrake and him seemed to go well together.

One conference attendee, David Edwards of Fresno, Calif., said Sheldrake had been talking about how thoughts can be transferred . . . During the lecture, he said, he saw an Asian man standing near the podium with his eyes closed like he was meditating.

Perhaps the perpetrator was thinking "I'm going to try and stab you in the leg, just above the kneecap, in about 30 seconds. So, if you really believe that you can receive this thought I'm sending you, you'll be able to avoid this."

If so, then either Edwards "receiver" wasn't working or it's all nonsense.

That's ridiculous. As any good psychic would be able to tell you, the messages from all the other attendees in the audience were jamming the perps signals.

Sun-News: Japanese man accused of attacking lecturer is arraigned
Bond has been set at $250,000 for a Japanese man accused of attacking an Englishman speaking on "thought transference" during an international conference in Santa Fe. State District Judge Michael Vigil on Friday set the bond for 33-year-old Kazuki Hirano of Yokohama, who has been held in the Santa Fe County jail. Hirano is charged with attempted aggravated battery with a knife or, alternatively, attempted murder. Rupert Sheldrake, a biologist known for his theories on mental telepathy, was stabbed in the left thigh April 2 during the 10th International Conference on Science and Consciousness at a Santa Fe hotel. Sheldrake says Hirano had told him the day before that he heard voices and thought people were trying to communicate with him telepathically.

AP: Japanese man enters plea in Santa Fe attack
A guilty plea has been entered by a Japanese man accused of attacking an Englishman speaking on "thought transference" during an international conference. Thirty-4-year-old Kazuki Hirano of Yokohama pleaded guilty yesterday in Santa Fe to a charge of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon. Prosecutors have recommended that he be sentenced to three years' probation. Prosecutors also have agreed not to object to his deportation to Japan. State District Judge Michael Vigil has scheduled sentencing for September 12th. A biologist known for his theories on mental telepathy, Rupert Sheldrake, was stabbed in the left thigh on April 2nd. He was attacked during the 10th International Conference on Science and Consciousness at a Santa Fe hotel. Hirano has said he believed Sheldrake was controlling his thoughts.

AP: Japanese man found guilty, mentally ill after attack
A Santa Fe jury has found a Japanese man guilty and mentally ill in the stabbing of an English biologist during an international conference. The verdict (Friday) requires the state to treat Kazuki Hirano of Yokohama for his illness while incarcerated. The 34-year-old attacker had accused the victim of controlling his thoughts. Rupert Sheldrake is an expert mental telepathy. Hirano faces up to three years behind bars, less the seven months he has already spent, for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. The jury declined to convict Hirano of attempted murder or attempted manslaughter. State District Judge Michael Vigil will sentence Hirano December Fifth.
