Hirano Kazuki, 33, of Yokohama, Japan, was arrested Wednesday on charges of aggravated battery and assault with intent to commit a violent felony in the stabbing of Rupert Sheldrake. He did not resist as officers led him in handcuffs from the hotel that was headquarters for the 10th International Conference on Science and Consciousness.

what is it with japanese people attacking these semi-obscure new wave scientists/theologians?
i remember that attack on peter barakan had religious overtones to it (a peace meeting at a quaker house), although i dont think the real motive was ever found in that case..

i had no idea who rupert sheldrake is, but a quick wiki search turned this up:

I think the overseas activities of the Yakuza alone would almost certainly mean that you are wrong. There are plenty of nations without an international organized crime group of such dimensions. Not many had a terrorist group like the Red Army either.

Remember also that the Japanese Ministry of Justice counts visa violations as a criminal offence. It's only anecdotal, but I personally know more Japanese who have been deported from Europe than foreigners from Japan. The current tally is 4 vs 2. Japanese students are well-known in the UK for working illegally while on a student visa.

The owner of a serviced apartment block I use in Tokyo sat down and had a chat with me when he learned I was from the UK. He reminisced about the wonderful time he had in London and how he had set up a successful business delivering lunchtime bentos. I asked him why he left and he said he had to leave in a hurry because he was about to be arrested for tax avoidance.

No idea, but I read a book by him and Terrence McKenna once. McKenna claimed that magic mushrooms are actually aliens who communicate with us through psychedelic experiences. Somehow Rupert Sheldrake and him seemed to go well together.

One conference attendee, David Edwards of Fresno, Calif., said Sheldrake had been talking about how thoughts can be transferred . . . During the lecture, he said, he saw an Asian man standing near the podium with his eyes closed like he was meditating.

Perhaps the perpetrator was thinking "I'm going to try and stab you in the leg, just above the kneecap, in about 30 seconds. So, if you really believe that you can receive this thought I'm sending you, you'll be able to avoid this."

If so, then either Edwards "receiver" wasn't working or it's all nonsense.

Bond has been set at $250,000 for a Japanese man accused of attacking an Englishman speaking on "thought transference" during an international conference in Santa Fe. Hirano is charged with attempted aggravated battery with a knife or, alternatively, attempted murder. Rupert Sheldrake, a biologist known for his theories on mental telepathy, was stabbed in the left thigh April 2 during the 10th International Conference on Science and Consciousness at a Santa Fe hotel. Sheldrake says Hirano had told him the day before that he heard voices and thought people were trying to communicate with him telepathically.

Prosecutors have recommended that he be sentenced to three years' probation. Prosecutors also have agreed not to object to his deportation to Japan. State District Judge Michael Vigil has scheduled sentencing for September 12th. A biologist known for his theories on mental telepathy, Rupert Sheldrake, was stabbed in the left thigh on April 2nd. A Santa Fe jury has found a Japanese man guilty and mentally ill in the stabbing of an English biologist during an international conference. The verdict (Friday) requires the state to treat Kazuki Hirano of Yokohama for his illness while incarcerated. The 34-year-old attacker had accused the victim of controlling his thoughts.
