Putting in a bad word for Japanese

In a similiar vein . . .
I love the fact that GOMI, FUN and GAIJIN are all written in katakana.

Even better . . .
When the cops come by for their household survey, my name and my watchdog's name are written in the margin in katakana as "chattel".

YES! That's what Japan needs: naturalized-alien Language Police.

Sort of like the Office de la langue francaise or the grand whazoos of the Academe of France.

Honestly the use of bastardised English (or other non-Japanese) words is doing a real disservice to the "purity" of the language as well as to people who are trying to communicate outside of Japan.

People are lulled into a false sense of fluency and ask for "beeru" thinking they are speaking English. Haven't we had a thread on this before??

But then if it ain't Japanese - adopt it and make it "better" isn't that how things have always been done.

Really it is the invention of completely new neologisms.. Starbucks becomes "sutarba", promotion becomes "kareauppu", control-top panty hose becomes "hipu-uppu" (which I think is funny considering that it is people resembling hippos who are in need - but it is not the best marketing to remind a fat person they are fat..)

(P.s. Oyaji - pan is the common word for bread amongst the romance languages.)

p.p.s I don't get the chattel thing - please explain...

The other night, the wife and I were watching NHK's evening news when the announcer began a segment on the topic of "domestic violence." The term he used was exactly that. Well okay, not exactly: what I heard was domesuchikku baiorensu.

Evening news everywhere in the world is mostly negative. Is it surprising to discover most English borrowings used on the news are mostly negative? Maybe the problem is the lack of fluffy human interest stories that plague the evening news back home.
