In Tokyo, Abercrombie Misses Its Mark

Excellent piece in The Business of Fashion re: Abercrombie in Japan.

But the big question is, will Abercrombie be able to win over new fans in Japan and replicate the unbelievably successful Japanese market entries of other mass fashion brands?

So far, the signs do not look good.

A and F guy to me outside the Ginza store last week: "Hey, dude, how's it goin'?!"

Me: "Pretty good, playa, how's it hangin'?"

Him: "Uh, great, dude."

Can't speak to the effectiveness of that exchange as a retailing strategy, but it did make me feel like I was back on campus.

I went last week. It's a pretty horrifying experience. I don't think they will get any repeat customers.

Though if it is not panning out that strategy could be flipped overnight: Turn up the lights, put clothes on the employees, kill the dance music, change the elevator settings and remove the cologne. The prices, however, are another matter.

The J GF sent me on a mission to get A&F stuff on my last trip to the States.

Ugh.
Basically I guess they're trying to have the trendy nightclub atmosphere. Dark, loud, lazy staff who ignore customers, high prices.

Without any of the GOOD parts. Booze. Drunk chicks. Drugs. Live music. Gyrating. :wall:

I won't go back even if the GF promises me a BJ for A&F.
