He was something of a musician's musician in his day. To say his genre fell out of fashion is profound understatement though. I did wonder a while back if all the vitriol directed at pomp rock was really justified and so went back to have a little listen to Yes. It sounded dreadful. I imagine ELP would sound even worse unfortunately. RIP anyway. A sad end - seems he was never able to re-invent himself.

Dusted off this album yesterday, made a huge impression on me when I was a kid.

If you had ever seen ELP live, especially in the early 70's (Jesus, I showing my age) they put on probably the best concerts of the era. Emerson was a pioneer in many ways and like them or hate them ELP had a massive influence on rock music.

Just looking at their concert details and they first came to Japan back in 1972.

There are times when you really do talk through your hat, and this is one of them. There are plenty of progressive rock albums from the 70's which remain both relevant and very listenable. Material by bands like King Crimson, Hatfield and the North, Gong, and Pink Floyd just to name a few. The problem with ELP is that they often exemplified the worst aspects of the genre: the long solos, pompousness, the heavy handed use of full orchestras and the predictable classical music on a moog schtick.

Thank you, I do try to make an effort, and aside from that lovely dissection of ELP you're FOS. King Crimson was always ponderous masturbatory rubbish and I remain uncomfortable crowbarring Pink Floyd into a full Prong Rock hole: even post-Syd Barrett they almost always produced a few solid rock songs even when their experimentation and flights of fancy took them elsewhere. WYWH and DSofTM, obviously, but as another example, The Wall. Largely self-indulgent rubbish but Comfortably Numb is a fine stoner song, and I seem to remember there being one or 2 others besides the unintended Pythonesque satire. BTW, we seem to have forgotten the worst of the worst: Rush. Or are they not considered Prongs?

I think that pretty much nails it. It seems to me that Baby Boomers proper and people a few younger than me have warm memories of Prong (and Disco). People of my age and tastes not so much. In a similar way lots of kids born in the 70s adore the stereotypical clangy cheesy 80s music, which is a strong case for mass insanity. For me it's Motown. At the end of the day it's taste in music, so OOOOK and Yea!
