Thought of going to Japan killed Keith Emerson

Postby Taro Toporific » Mon Mar 14, 2016 5:51 pm

Keith Emerson's widow claims flamboyant showman was a 'sensitive soul' killed himself after taking cruel jibes to heart
Daily Fail | 13 March 2016
...
Keith Emerson [of Emerson, Lake and Palmer] died aged 71 at his home in Santa Monica, Los Angeles...from self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head...
...
‘He read all the criticism online and was a sensitive soul,’ said his Japanese girlfriend, Mari Kawaguchi, 52.
Although he had been planning to retire after a string of upcoming concerts in Japan, he was ‘tormented with worry’ that he wouldn’t be good enough, she said. ‘He didn’t want to let down his fans. He was a perfectionist and the thought he wouldn’t play perfectly made him depressed, nervous and anxious.’
...blah, blah, blah...

I would have stuck for better, she looks even worse than most Japanese in the UK, but he was Englmalish, and they are cheap when it comes to Chaineez girls. Still, a shame he killed himself. I would have explained that staying alive wasn't brain salad surgery. Even though they were always kinda shit. Except for that one song that wasn't an organ donor's dream.

PS Hilarious what low standards you Euro/East Coaster/ White Trash Landers have. Feck, .........she's not ugly, but she's barely a 4. It does explain the cat thing, though. ;)

Dissing his partner is trashy.

He was something of a musician's musician in his day. To say his genre fell out of fashion is profound understatement though. I did wonder a while back if all the vitriol directed at pomp rock was really justified and so went back to have a little listen to Yes. It sounded dreadful. I imagine ELP would sound even worse unfortunately. RIP anyway. A sad end - seems he was never able to re-invent himself.

It is a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing.

If the alternatives were to either shoot yourself in the face or spend your twilight years in a Japanese nursing home, then this wise man has surely taken a good choice. R.I.P. Keith.

Sad that he took himself out, but if he was losing the use of his hands maybe he made a brave decision.

Dusted off this album yesterday, made a huge impression on me when I was a kid.

If you had ever seen ELP live, especially in the early 70's (Jesus, I showing my age) they put on probably the best concerts of the era. Emerson was a pioneer in many ways and like them or hate them ELP had a massive influence on rock music.

Just looking at their concert details and they first came to Japan back in 1972.

FIFY ;)

Well, look at that F1 driver and what he thought was hot. BTW, you cannot imagine how ethnically provincial Brits are. You could be from Cape Woebegone near Lake Omygoshwe'rewhite and still know more non-whites than most Brits could ever imagine. I am sure there are pockets, but it was the pastiest motherfucking place I have ever parked my equally pasty white ass. Nice people, though, for the most. Plus, they like the skinny butterfacers.

Still dubious?

Yoko Ono.

Japanese wives are like Japanese cars: Cheap, don't drink much, low maintenance and durable. Brits know their economics...

A lovely coda. I find it sad that some would rather die than fade gracefully in comfort, but like others said, Thank you and Goodnight.

PS Prong Rock really is dreadful stuff now, and ELP especially so. Utter wank drivel. I wish I could remember that one song I did like, but it seems too much effort.

PPS I tried, but it was too awful. Ooook and Eeegads!!!!!!!!!!!! :puke:

There are times when you really do talk through your hat, and this is one of them. There are plenty of progressive rock albums from the 70's which remain both relevant and very listenable. Material by bands like King Crimson, Hatfield and the North, Gong, and Pink Floyd just to name a few. The problem with ELP is that they often exemplified the worst aspects of the genre: the long solos, pompousness, the heavy handed use of full orchestras and the predictable classical music on a moog schtick.

Thank you, I do try to make an effort, and aside from that lovely dissection of ELP you're FOS. King Crimson was always ponderous masturbatory rubbish and I remain uncomfortable crowbarring Pink Floyd into a full Prong Rock hole: even post-Syd Barrett they almost always produced a few solid rock songs even when their experimentation and flights of fancy took them elsewhere. WYWH and DSofTM, obviously, but as another example, The Wall. Largely self-indulgent rubbish but Comfortably Numb is a fine stoner song, and I seem to remember there being one or 2 others besides the unintended Pythonesque satire. BTW, we seem to have forgotten the worst of the worst: Rush. Or are they not considered Prongs?

I think that pretty much nails it. It seems to me that Baby Boomers proper and people a few younger than me have warm memories of Prong (and Disco). People of my age and tastes not so much. In a similar way lots of kids born in the 70s adore the stereotypical clangy cheesy 80s music, which is a strong case for mass insanity. For me it's Motown. At the end of the day it's taste in music, so OOOOK and Yea!

It's amazing what nostalgia can do. That's why KISS is so popular with guys about ten years older than me. And why The Rolling Stones have a career.
