It gives the fabric a funny smell and in some cases causes a rash on the wearer. Japanese sleepwear isn't subject to the same regulations. I learnt this just a few weeks ago as some friends in the US always have their kids pajamas sent over by their Japanese grandparents.
There will be a red tag on the pajamas to say they are fire resistant.
I think the reason for this is because most house fires happen at night. I think that is why..
