No, all pajamas sold in the US must have flame retardant chemicals impregnated into the fabric. Same in Australia.

It gives the fabric a funny smell and in some cases causes a rash on the wearer. Japanese sleepwear isn't subject to the same regulations. I learnt this just a few weeks ago as some friends in the US always have their kids pajamas sent over by their Japanese grandparents.

There will be a red tag on the pajamas to say they are fire resistant.

I think the reason for this is because most house fires happen at night. I think that is why..

In Australia the PJ's of all under eights must be flame retardant to slow down the instaces of the littlies catching fire when getting too close to heaters/fires in winter. Being old enough to remember the law being passed when at least two deaths and more injuries from burning kids a year were common I am at least a partial supporter of this idea. Think how often kids are dressed in PJ's for the evening and this makes more and more sence. The adult flame retardant PJ's is just a carry-over from the children's law as the manufacturers use the same specification for all sizes now in case a child wears a small Adult size. no humour in this post as I still cringe when i think of flaming pj's.
