.... They stormed into the apartment building and ran upstairs. Some branched off at the third floor and the rest went straight up to the fifth. By the time they started ringing doorbells and banging on doors, they were all sporting either mesh vests bearing the brightly printed word "immigration", or police armbands, and had been transformed into a raiding force of about 50 officials.

The raid was part of the largest-ever immigration-control campaign in the country. It began in mid-September and is being conducted by the Tokyo Regional Immigration Bureau and the Metropolitan Police Department to crack down on foreigners illegally living and working in Japan.

The raids by immigration and police authorities are apparently being conducted in line with a pledge made by Tokyo Governor Shintaro Ishihara to crack down on crimes involving foreigners.

I know he's anti-American and racist and an all around enemy to gaijins everywhere but for some reason I kind of like this guy. Does anybody else feel the same way?

Three reasons to love Gov. Blinky:
1. He banned the burning of fake diesel (bunker oil + dioxin + kerosene) in trucks in Tokyo.
2. Dual use of Atsugi Airport---greater use of Hanada.
3. He actually says what he thinks.

When I first read the subject line I was a bit worried that they were going to crack down on me - I am harboring an illegal in my apartment..

I have a kitten and my contract says "No Pets". There was no clause that said "No foreigners" but I still had to have an interview before being allowed to move in..

meh, all he is going after is the illegals. if he wants to blame the illegals for all the crime and then gets rid of said illegals... either he will prove his point or be left with nothing. either way, who cares about the illegals? if they REALLY wanted to be there, they would have gone through the process like everyone else.
