Electric Kettle

Postby Yokohammer » Sat Jul 16, 2011 7:51 am

With all the irradiated food circulating around this is going to seem like a non-issue, but here goes anyway:

I have just been given one of those electric kettles that are so popular these days. It's a T-fal thing, which is mostly plastic. It works great. Boils water quickly, shuts off automatically, comfortable handle that doesn't get hot. Being thoroughly addicted to coffee I can see getting a lot of use out of the thing. But, other than the stainless-steel bit at the bottom that does the heating, it's all plastic. Boiling water in plastic?

Anyone know anything about the dangers of chemicals leaching from the plastic in such an application? I've searched around the web a bit, but nothing authoritative. I figure I've got a better chance of getting an "authortitative" answer here on FG.

we've got one here as well and i've wondered that myself.
but i can tell you the t-fal consumes energy like no other appliance. if you end up using it often prepare for a higher electric bill.

Yikes! I thought the thing was supposed to be energy efficient because it boils so quickly and shuts off automatically. It's rated at about 1200 watts, I think (might have been 1250), but it'll boil water for two mugs of coffee in about two minutes. Pretty good, I thought, but I'll keep my eye on the electric bill.

Sure you're not talking about something that keeps the water hot?

Mine says "Tasse", so it's a different type. But I looked up Vitesse and they seem to be pretty similar, except perhaps yours might have higher capacity.

So it really is a similar boil-only thing with automatic shutoff. I'll definitely have to keep an eye on the electric bill.

For years we have been using one of those pots that boils the water and then keeps it hot all day, ready whenever you are. I assumed the T-fal would be a bit easier on the electric bill than that. Guess we'll have to wait and see.

I have the small Justine model and been using it for about 2 years. Love it to death but who knows what chemicals in the plastic can escape into your drink...

I wonder how it would work if they cast the body of these things out of viagra? If that were the case, then only the wifey/gf would have to worry about what escaped into the drink....

Actually, it is just the opposite.
Plastics are known to release estrogen-mimicking chemicals into the environment.

So what!?

Apart from the plastics in their products, there may then also be issues with their nonstick Teflon coatings.

It's only called T-Fal here and in the US because of copyright claims from dupont because it sounds too much like teflon and it's a boringly retarded reason...
