OK, when I studied CS, I understood magnetic disks and how they store data. That was easy.
Polycarbonate (plastic) disks? Nope, don't understand how they work. PAPER DISKS? WTF? I'm lost. I give up. Where's my Tannenbaum coursebook? I feel old ....
the plastic is just an optical carrier for the aluminum platter on traditional cd/dvd etc.
the paper in this case is a nonoptical substrate, because in blue ray the substrate is 1.1mm, and the protective optical layer is 0.1mm, kind of the opposite of current discs.
