OK, when I studied CS, I understood magnetic disks and how they store data. That was easy.
Polycarbonate (plastic) disks? Nope, don't understand how they work.

the plastic is just an optical carrier for the aluminum platter on traditional cd/dvd etc.
the paper in this case is a nonoptical substrate, because in blue ray the substrate is 1.1mm, and the protective optical layer is 0.1mm, kind of the opposite of current discs.
