AU's fall lineup includes the HTC J (aka butterfly, and it's waterproof) with the first 5.0" screen, and it looks like there will be lots more 5-inchers (with full HD 1080p resolution) coming in the spring.
Not much point squeezing more than 720p resolution into a smartphone screen as the naked eye really can't distinguish the pixels at that size. And as for the craze for bigger screen size, beyond about 4.5" they are just too big to fit comfortably in a pants pocket (and most females already complain they are too big).

But, personally I wouldn't want to have a conversation longer than 2 mins. on that massive unit, and I have fairly large hands. Now that tethering is available across the board in Japan, I am looking at getting a 7" tablet, and just pairing with my smartphone if and when use outside of Wi-Fi hotspots is necessary.

This one is not Wi-Fi only, it's an Xi LTE service docomo-only unit (for now).
Sporting apparently the largest world’s largest organic EL screen, might be worth taking a look at (if it wasn't locked into docomo).
It costs 87,990 yen through docomo's online store. With a subsidised monthly discount of 2,520 yen x 24 months (total 60,480 yen), total cost to the consumer will be 27,510 yen (cost info here).
It will be interesting to see how much a Wi-Fi only model will be.
