When on stage before the TV cameras, the lanky comedienne with an Osaka-accented foghorn voice frequently towers over her male counterparts, an appearance that has helped her earn the show-business sobriquet "jotei" (female emperor).
Describing popular TV entertainer Akiko "Akko" Wada as a Japanese Carol Burnett would not be far off the mark.
