Forty years after its debut, "Star Trek" remains popular with its fans and Japan is no exception. Marking the 40th anniversary of the series' debut, Paramount Pictures Japan and several co-sponsors have announced a "Star Trek 40th Project." The current "Star Trek" market is worth about 11.5 billion yen, with DVD sales totaling up to 600,000 units...there are an enormous number of Trekkies in Japan, but they do not speak up or organize events like their counterparts overseas because they do not want to be associated with the "otaku" or "Akiba-kei" anime or game fans who base themselves in Akihabara.
