Japanese Trekkies "Not Otaku"

Postby Mulboyne » Tue May 23, 2006 12:18 am

[floatl]Image[/floatl]Crisscross: An exciting year for Trekkies in Japan
Forty years after its debut, "Star Trek" remains popular with its fans and Japan is no exception. Marking the 40th anniversary of the series' debut, Paramount Pictures Japan and several co-sponsors have announced a "Star Trek 40th Project." The current "Star Trek" market is worth about 11.5 billion yen, with DVD sales totaling up to 600,000 units...there are an enormous number of Trekkies in Japan, but they do not speak up or organize events like their counterparts overseas because they do not want to be associated with the "otaku" or "Akiba-kei" anime or game fans who base themselves in Akihabara. Paramount is aiming to create a new "cool" and "pop" image attached to the series to encourage fans to openly admit they are Trekkies...more...

Where no auction has gone before

E! Online on 5/19/06 wrote: A massive auction of Star Trek props, costumes, models and Vulcan tapestry culled direct from Paramount's studio vaults was announced Thursday by Christie's in New York. Though billed as a 40th anniversary event, the sale, to be held Oct. 5-7, will feature less of the 40-year-old variety Starfleet stuff, and more of the Next Generation and beyond variety brands.

I have never actually seen a Japanese Trekkie. Does such a being really exist?

Many years ago I met a bloke in Takadonaba who claimed to be president of a Star Trek fan club in Japan. For all I know he could have been the bona fide national trekkie co-ordinator or simply dreaming the dream.

I'm both a Trek fan and an anime fan. Neither fandom is "cooler" than the other. Find something you enjoy doing, and then you can have fun with that in your free time. Don't worry about how "cool" or "uncool" it is.
Listen up. You have two choices. A. Beaten then caught. Or B. Caught then beaten. -Kuga Kohtarou, Shikigami no Shiro II
