Sad but true-The definition of "Wapanese"

Postby Pencilslave » Mon Nov 22, 2004 12:53 pm

WAPANESE-
Someone who takes fanboying to the next level. Is brainwashed by the rosy images on anime that Japan is a wonderland where no wrong can't be righted. Listens to J-pop yet hates American pop, and fails to draw the line from Ayumi Hamasaki to Britney Spears. Hates "Bad Greedy American Microsoft" but doesn't realize that Sony is 10 times bigger. Puts Japanese words in American sentences and thinks it's ok because the Japanese pepper their songs with English. Uses the word "otaku" like it's a good thing but doesn't realize it means "obsessed to the point of a mental disorder" in Japanese. Thinks the Japanese will treat him like a king when Japan is one of the most racist, xenophobic, and secretive countries on the planet. Wants to hook up with a Japanese woman but will probably fail at that also.

I'm not giving up dem dere Jap'nese cahtoons but I'm definitely gonna remember that's all they are.

Not this all over again...where is this definition from BTW? Is it your own creation?

I could comment on a large degree of this but it would be mainly subjective, just on the cartoon point, went to see a film this week in a Japanese cinema - Hauru. Thought it was as strange as hell, but was nonetheless impressed with the production values and cinematography - I think a lot of anime films can and do compare to Western films.

I can't think of many films that have the depth and mainstream appeal, of say, Ghost in the Shell
Homer: Lisa, Vampires are make-believe, like elves, gremlins, and eskimos.

I got the definition from off an image board named 4chan. Please do not misunderstand. I'm a HUGE fan of anime and manga, having watched over 1000 tapes and dvds and having read countless manga. I was just owning up to the fact that I'm a bit Wapanese. But since discovering this board, I'm more knowledgable of how things really are.

I guess the main thing I'm getting at is too many J-fans get this notion in their heads that everything in Japan is better than their home country which simply isn't true. Japan is just as flawed as the rest of the planet.

Cool man, didn't want to seem like I was jumping on you. Its just (even in my small time here) I have seen a number of people come on and make statements like the above - for what purpose I don't know, maybe just for some attention.

I agree with your comments though about a lot of rose-tinted otaku, then again, the grass always does seem greener on the other side. So far, I have loved Japan on my little holiday, but then again I did come here with a bit of knowledge and perspective :)

I agree with you on the racist side also. I am staying in Minamisenju which is the Japanese equivalent of Hicksville USA. Most people just stare at me in disbelief and trust me I ain't anything special. However I just laugh it off. In Ireland we have had a huge influx of foreigners in the last 5 years and even though it hurts me to say it, we are quite racist. Its not down to something deeper or indigenous, rather the fact that we are just not used to seeing so many people of another culture in our little country - a bit like my friends in Minamisenju!

Hey, I have no problem with wapanese. If you can find something that gets you through the day and makes you look forward to the weekend's cosplay party, more power to you.

But that is best enjoyed from the safety of America via a computer.

All media creates illusion, the illusion of Japanese media is quite comforting. 98% of all westerners who learn Japanese do with some schoolgirl omanko in mind.

Hate to perpetuate a stereotype, but the average gaijin male who still has all his real teeth and doesn't stink too bad will probably be able to find more action here than back home. And, granted you're from a first-world country, I would argue against the "xenophobic, secretive" slam as well. Have you ever been to, say Korea? Or Mississippi?

A piss-poor example, I know...

Somewhat off-topic, but do you know anywhere you can find some amusing pics of fugly gaijin and their inappropriately fit J-bird girlfriends? Think it'd make a great thread...

On the other hand, for some evidence of severely disturbed "Wapanese" otaku activity, why not "Ask Rei?"

Not Another Teen Movie (it's in the file's description).

I was thinking about a scene in that movie, but I realized that the guy in the picture was in the scene.

The guy in the hachimaki made a generic "whaaaaaaaaaaaah" karate-pantomime guesture to an Asian guy (for who knows what reason...) and then he got side-kicked in the head by the Asian guy... it was pretty funny :D
