WRESTLING/ Yoshida leads Japan to World Cup win after father's death
AJW by The Asahi Shimbun | March 17, 2014
Three-time Olympic champion Saori Yoshida helped Japan win a women's wrestling World Cup on March 16, just days after her father died.
Yoshida defeated Maria Gurova by technical fall in the 53-kilogram class as Japan captured its first title in two years with an 8-0 win over Russia.
Yoshida's 61-year-old father, Eikatsu, who also served as coach of Japan's national women's team, was found dead in his car after suffering a brain hemorrhage on the morning of March 11 while driving on an expressway.
"I felt like my father was here fighting with me today," Yoshida said. "I want to thank all the fans who came out today and offered their support. I feel great."
