[/floatr]A T-shirt depicting the "assassination of Ichiro" is on sale in Korea as competition heats up in the World Baseball Classic. The image intentionally references the 1909 assassination of Hirobumi Ito, then Resident-General of Korea, by An Jung-geun, featuring Ichiro as Ito and pitcher Bong Jung-keun as "patriot" An (the two Koreans share the same given name). The design is lifted directly from the cover of a well-known biography of An (right). Bong's South Korean team, the LG Twins, got permission to parody the illustration and put 330 shirts on sale which were all snapped up the same day. This year is the 100th anniversary of the assassination so the event has been recalled on a number of occasions in the Korean media in relation to the rivalry between the two nations. An is said to have shot Ito three times and Korean netizens have compared this with the three times "patriot" Bong held Ichiro hitless in their match-up. Korean supporters have not forgiven Ichiro for his comment at the last World Baseball Classic that he wanted to hand the Korean team a defeat which they would remember for thirty years. Hirobumi Ito is also an unpopular figure because he is regarded as one of the architects of Japan's imperialist ambitions.Edit: There's a ZakZak report here (Japanese)
