What I don't get is Japanophile-otaku who don't migrate to Japan. If the country and its culture is their passion / obession, I presume living in Japan would satisfy their every need.

Oh, so your choice of what is worth such devotion is better than FGL's? I'm sure you would say that religion is more worthy than anything, but that's no more valid than sports or movies to many people.

I agree with FGL that anime as entertainment is usually fine but that's not what we're talking about. We're talking about cosplay and similar manifestations of an obsession with anime. People who obsess on it (especially adults) are fucked up. It's not a defense of their obsession to say that they are harmless - I'm sure they are harmless - but that doesn't obviate the fact that they are engaging in creepy, immature behavior not befitting a normal person their age.

I'd say you're entitled to call them "fucked" to the extent that their wacko ways interfere with others in some kind of negative way. Applying some kind objective qualification based on subjective values on the other hand is very fucked indeed!

Hey Bird, I was basicaly stating that his logic was faultly. Note that I did in no way state what was acceptable or worthy. Personally, I dislike religion.
That might sound like contradiction, but it is true. PM me if you want me to explain in detail.

In any case, I believe GI stated what FGL was trying to say in clearer manner.

While being a Canadian I have never understood NASCAR, but many football/hockey fans have at least at sometime played the sport in question and watching it is a way to relive their beer gutless former days of glory. Essentially, this is the difference. Otaku 'experience' is defined as beating Sephiroth on cheat mode for the 37th time.

In a way though it is good to keep all the otakus in one area of town (so I know which places to avoid) or let them stay in their darkened rooms playing with themselves and their dorky games as it makes the streets safer for the rest of us. ;)

Everybody needs a hobby I guess but at least these socially inept losers are not hurting anybody. I say leave them to it - may not be your cup of ocha but then I think that my hobbies wouldn't be appealing to some people either. Each to their own.. live and let live.. eat more mung beans.... any other cliches I can mention?

But kids walking around town dressed as anime characters when there is no con in town IS crossing the line.

So, I can't say that anime freakzoids are fucked up, but you can say that they are "crossing the line" if they do cosplay with "no con in town"? Do you not see the hipocrasy?

Anyway AO, I really don't care if people wish to waste (large chunks of) their lives living in fantasy worlds. I think it's fucked up, but maybe they'll do better in their next life.

Serious!? I am most definitely not serious. There is nothing at all serious about anime, and that is why people taking it seriously is fucked up....and funny.

Anyway... Back to the real world for me. :)

FGL,
I owe you an apology. A Japanese friend of mine just came back from Japan and she and her family went to Akihabara. In the middle of the hall, she talked for 10 minutes straight about her experience. She told me about a sea of 50 year old men in sailor suits trying to pick up young boys. She told me about cafes where the waitresses wear maid outfits and call customers master.

I can't go into detail about everything she said because I literally got overloaded, but then she said and I quote, "What happened to my country?!"

I did not know how bad it was over there.

Seamy underside belies 'watt' goes on in Akiba
Japan Times
Known throughout the world as the top electronic gadget district and as a favorite spot for computer geeks, Akihabara is gaining an embarrassing reputation for criminal activity that is causing concern among police and local residents.

The Metropolitan Police Department's Manseibashi Police Station said about 500 criminal offenses were reported in 2005 as a result of the rapid transformation of the district in recent years.

Takashi Kogure, president of the federation of neighborhood associations in the Manseibashi district, said Akihabara, or Akiba for short, "used to see few people after 8 p.m., but it is now becoming a town that doesn't sleep."

But even as Akihabara's reputation as a testing ground for exciting new technology has grown, its popularity has also led to worrying offshoot developments....more...

HIS Launches Japanese Pop Culture Tours
Anime News Network
HIS International Tours has started offering its own Japanese Pop Culture Tours under the Destination Japan banner. HIS was previously the travel partner of Pop Japan Travel, which placed its tours on hiatus this year.

Earl Gertawen of HIS (formerly of Pop Japan Travel) informed ANN that, in addition to its first Destination Japan tour in September, HIS expect to operate several Japanese pop culture tours per year, although the exact number remains to be determined.

Destination Japan's first tour is the "Summer Maximum" tour, from September 17 to 23. The tour costs $1799 ($1599 until July 17) plus taxes, and tourers will visit the Tokyo Game Show. Gertawen states that "Destination Japan can offer competitive prices because we're part of a travel agency."

One of the features of the Summer Maximum tour is the "Japan Experience" segment, which allows participants to chose one of several Japan Experience tours such as "Who wants to be a Samurai," "Make your own Sushi," and "Taiko Drumming." Japan Experience is a separate tour group operated by HIS Japan, sister company of HIS International.

Preliminary information about Destination Japan is available from its website.

Destination Japan is the second new Japanese pop culture tour company to be launched in recent months, with Intermixi Japan Tours forming last month. Intermixi Japan Tours also features former staff of Pop Japan Travel.

What's more, shops selling sexually explicit anime DVDs and electronic games are displaying signboards adorned with naked girls in plain view of a nearby elementary school.

Yeah, cuz it's not like you ever see old pervs reading porn mags in plain view on the train or anything....

When I went to Akiba the first time, I got so sick of turning a corner in an otherwise normal shop and accidentally stumbling into a sticky pages section. Not that I mind porn, but it was just all out there in the open--and perhaps even more depressing... none of it looked good.

I usually don't click on youtube links.

It's one thing to read a description, it's a different matter to hear a Japanese woman go into explicit detail along with the sound effects that only a Japanese woman can create in order to describe the scene.

But yeah. Time I started paying more attention to the world around me. It's a mess.

Some very good points Kuang. Now regarding football. As I may have mentioned earlier, I live in the college football capital of the world: Alabama.
The obsessive rivalry between Alabama and Auburn makes anime and manga obsession look pale in comparison. Admittedly, most of the fans down here, are normal, but I'm dreading the day I pick up the Birmingham News and found out someone's obsession has gone way too far and they've sacrificed an infant to Lord God Bear Bryant or Lord God Pat Dye.

Anime, like anything is alright as a pastime, but when it takes over your life to the exclusion of all else, then you've got a problem.

ok i already told the cosplay people to hang themselfs in another thread, but i will rant one more time.

i watch anime on a low level basis and i play street fighter like a mad man, but you will NEVER see me dressed up as ryu or ken, EVER. if you are older than 13 and you dress up as a character when it is not Halloween, you need to quit jacking off over some cartoons and jump into some pussy or sit on a dick (ya that sounds wierd)

for the girls dressed up like maids, they will either become massuses, (ya i spelled that wrong) or some type of hostess. i mean, it is damn sexy, i wouldn't mind banging 4 or 5 of them at a time, but they sort of cross the line when it comes to their "casual" attire. but i would have to check their ID just in case, i dont wanna hook up wid some 15 year old, but that maid shit is WAAAAAAAAAAAAAY to tempting

the same goes for those over tanned, over make uped, harajuku kids. STOP! ya it is a form of fasion, ya you should be able to express it, but god damn. i cant say anymore about that, those kids are just to easy to make fun of, just wouldn't be fun.

just go hang your selfs please. and for those otaku gaijin that dress up like cartoons, fuck off and dont try to defend yourself on this thread, just save your finger strength for you anime mag in the toilet. make sure you clean up and dont leave any jiz spots anywhere.

i am really not going to try to concentrate on my spellin and punctuation. you might care, but youll still understand my point and as long as the first and last letters are correct (and my spellin is not to fucked up), you can still read what i wrote, right? unless you dont know any english but text book english. do you really care about punctuation in a forum???????? spelling i can understand, but im not an engrish teacher, so if you are, im not your student.

its ok GG, no need to rant off subject. just make another thread called, "craxican's fucked up english" and you can complain all day by yourself. if any one else wants to, you can cop on my english like takechanpoopoo's racism and hate towards us gaijin. just dont bann me:grin:
