China is planning to study the effects of space on sperm, by sending the semen from pedigree pigs into orbit.

The pigs chosen are a breed called Rongchang, named after an area in the southwest of the country and famed for their physique and for the quality of their meat.

China became the third nation to send a human into space, after the United States and Russia, two years ago.

The spermatozoa will be returned to Earth and used in breeding experiments, through in-vitro fertilisation. Biologists will search for any genetic changes in the resultant "space pigs" that could be caused by exposure to cosmic rays.

Genetic mutations experienced by these mammals could, in theory, be extrapolated to potential mutations in human astronauts.
