japanese stuff on a palm?

Postby bluepxl » Fri Dec 27, 2002 2:39 pm

yo, a friend is offering to sell me a palm (sony clie). the problem is, i don't have hardly any contacts (the ones i do have, are in my phone since i can store a lot of info in it). also, i'm not the planning type-- in fact i barely have anything to ever plan (ie appointments, meetings, etc.. i never have these). also, i don't get a lot of email, so that email sync feature would be useless pretty much. i was thinking probably the only thing i'd do with it is draw... and that's kind of just a waste of money.

but then, i got to thinking, there has to be some good japanese apps out there. if i could find some japanese-english dictionaries, kanji flash card things, and other japanese software, i think i would definitely want to use the clie all the time on the go to help me learn japanese more and aid me in finding japanese words when i need them.

does anyone know of any, and are there any free apps out there? also, the palm OS on there is english (v4 or something)... is there ANY way of displaying/inputting japanese in the case that i am able to get japanese study apps? i don't want to work with romaji you know!

and not just japanese learning software.. any cool japanese apps? can anyone give me a good reason like i should own a palm? hehe 8)

All that stuff and more is available on your mobile phone.. i-mode and j-phone. you don't have to carry another machine around with you if study is all you are needing... What sort of phone do you have?

I use it everyday and it is really handy especially at restaurants trying to decipher the zillion types of fish kanji.

But Clie's are great for other stuff like actually writing long emails in English or Japanese, keeping track of your expenses (I have a graph of all my bills since I moved into my new apartment.), tokyo subway maps, games, I think you can even compose music but don't quote me. If you want to see the range, drop into a huge software shop and look at the range for Clies and so this should be the deciding factor for you.

Does anyone know if Palm also do digicam, music and video player (like "real player" or better) ?

I don't see the utility for the subway map since they give pocket-size booklet or card maps for free in every station and the map is always inside the train anyway. Or is it one of these programs that calculate the quickest or cheapest way between any two stations in Japan (JR, subway, etc.) like Ekitan ? That'd be useful.
