The Enrichment Center reminds you that the weighted companion cube will never threaten to stab you and, in fact, cannot speak.

Then again, American shows don't lower the sound right in the middle of the action and announce the sponsors while it's still running.

On the other hand, I can't understand Japanese so it doesn't matter to me; only during the foreign movie nights can I enjoy classics such as Species 1, 2 and Replicant with minimal interruption.

Yeah- It was entertaining for a day to get cable in Japan with FOXTV. I mean, who doesn't love those same 14 Simpsons episodes all Fox's everywhere show.

But then the rest of their lineup is endlessly looped 7-year-old vomit.. Seems they don't show anything here without the full dvd collection being available at tsutaya. "The Practice"? "Ally McBeal"? "X-files"? "Dharma and Greg"?!?!? 70's show (3rd season), and 24 (season 2). That's your day's lineup, folks. It repeats at midnight. The only thing worth a fart is NIP/TUCK.

Talk about low....

Theyre still only showing season 2 of 24?
I couldve sworn they had season 3 on Japanese TV last year... while i was dl'ing season 4 from the US.
What would Jack say?

Oishi Oishi vs. MAIYU!

Postby Somerandomgaijin » Fri Jul 29, 2005 3:47 am

Not to beat a dead horse. (smack smack)

Anyone with thoughts on the fact that Japan has NO bad food.
Zero. Everything they show me on tv is always delicious. Hell for that matter, there is no mediocre food either. It's always OISHII or MAIYUU! :!:

About the US programming...I find myself watching Pure D Shit sometimes. Just so I can hear English. Hell I watched Charmed for Christ's sake. I had never even seen the show until I came here.

The really good shows in Japan come on after 11p.m.. And those psuedo-lesbian/A.V. Idol shows are few and far between.

Random

I stand corrected on the bad food issue.

Actually I have seen some shows where they have said that something tastes bad. Few and far between.

It was on a show where they had some Spanish people come over from some food comapny and try to copy a Japanese recipie. They tried a few times and got told it was no good. They went back and tried again, and got told that it was still rubbish. Eventually they ended the show on a really sour note.

I figure it was revenge from all the times Japanese chefs go over to other countries to copy a local recipie only to face the same kind of criticism.

I am sick of food shows though, but to be honest, food is one of the only "safe" topics I can actually talk about with some of my Japanese colleagues. That and the weather.....
Most other conversation topics tend to break their "wa"

It seems to me that only America can make any decent TV shows. It's not just the language barrier and it's not just Japan. It's like the rest of the world is retarded.

Mr Kobayashi: First, I experienced a sort of overpowering feeling whenever I was in the room with foreigners, not to mention a powerful body odor coming from them. I don't know whether it was a sweat from the heat or a cold sweat, but I remember I was sweating whenever they were around.

Im disappointed with most of the shows produced in Ireland, but the BBC and Channel 4 put together some outstanding programming]http://www.fuckedgaijin.com/forum/album_mod/upload/27a420c3b51932b9e04698c0309ef2c4.jpg[/img]

I'm starved for entertainment, so tell, what's the leaked FG movie?

Edit: Oh - I get it, Family Guy. Not so interested anymore. As Kevin Smith says, there are two types of people in this world, Simpsons people and Family Guy people. I just don't find Family Guy funny.

Sure most American TV is crap but all the good shows are American. Yeah, the BBC and NHK can make documentaries but they can't do anything creative or funny.

Yes Minister
Blackadder
The young Ones
Dr Who
Ripping Yarns

(I'm not up on more recent shows)

They were all pretty good for their time AK, and probably ahead of the US in terms of social commentary and coalface humor, at the time. But in the last 15 years the US TV industry has made leaps and bounds. What they're putting out now is much better than anywhere else in the world. There's a lot of crap too - like any reality show, or anything that has to do with Paris Hilton, but if you look at the best being produced out there, then it's top class.

Sadly, the crap reality shows are largely the fault of British TV companies. Aside from Big Brother, which I think is Dutch, all the big shows (Pop Idol, The Apprentice, Survivor etc) were originated by UK production companies. Together with the team behind Who Wants to Be a Millionaire, they have made a mint as well as some low-quality programming.

Hey AK

Postby canman » Sat Jul 30, 2005 8:41 am

Although the Canadian tv industry is dwarfed and smothered by the larger Us industry, they do produce some pretty funny shows. But they are fairly local in scope. I've heard good things about Trailer Park boys. This hour has 22 minutes, The Red Green show. You have to go out and look for it. But yes the US industry does seem to produce a lot of good material, although its seems every second show is produced by Jerry Bruckenheimer these days.
And yes Fox sucks. My all time favorite on Fox was and is Temptation Island, and then Temptation Island UK(I think), which seemed to be a cheaper knock off. What a load of crap. :puke:

Cart before horse...Temptation Island was developed by Rocket Science Labs who sold it to Fox.

...although that could yet be used as evidence for better production quality in the US...

Fox Japan sucks. But I do agree with you that the shows you mentioned other than X-files are all classics. But I wish they would try and keep them up to date. I keep seeing the same shows over and over. BTW did you ever see the episode of King of the Hill called "Bobby goes nuts". I thought I would die laughing at him kicking everyone in the groin. What a great show.
