The word is from boondocks (originally from Tagalog I think), in this case meaning out in the country of even jungle, kind of like the outback would mean across the pond from you!

Yanks in slang refer to anything away from the big city (or Mt. Manganui) as out in the boonies. As I say, I believe it came from a Philippino Tagalog word for jungle. We just use it primarily to confuse Kiwi's!
