Alcohol, Tobacco & Firearms should be the name of a store, not a government agency.

So it has touch sensitive areas and the main action happens when you manage to find and finger a very small ball - about the size of a pea ...

got my 12" ibook today....

its neater and lighter than my 15" vaio
although i find the screen sharpness and brightness is lower quality
and of course the resolution could easily be improved

the guy at the new york soho store convinced my dad who is pretty clueless about computers that hed be better off buying applecare and .mac membership too... which i didnt really want and dont think i need

i guess ill have some teething troubles and then everything will be dandy :)

oh.. and i was one day too early for that mouse - but i probably wouldnt have bought it anyway - ill wait till theres a cheaper or bluetooth one

Trust me, you'll be glad you have Applecare. Most Apple laptops have needed Applecare at least once in 3 years in my experience.

My Chinese, 800-yen laser, 3-button, scrollwheel mouse has worked for years with my Apple systems. It's kind of hard justifying the additional expense since any old trackball, tablet or scrollwheel works with OSX. Still the Mighty Mouse(tm) is slicker than snot covered natto on ice.

I hope they stick a 2nd button next the trackpad on future i/power-bux:
im finding the single button action + stretching fingers across the keyboard in different directions to shortcut keys tedious already.

I have a 3 button optical to stick in it anytime.
I know it sounds picky; but if i just want to check a couple of quick things on the internet, on a regular basis, its a pain to have to bring along the mouse and keep taking it out + connecting; disconnecting and putting away.

I noticed my ibook is getting very hot if used for longer than an hour - 65C?!
than the fan stays on till it drops to 50C - granted it not anywhere as loud as the fan in P4 laptops.

The danger is that you become used to being excluded.
Mr Kobayashi: First, I experienced a sort of overpowering feeling whenever I was in the room with foreigners, not to mention a powerful body odor coming from them. I don't know whether it was a sweat from the heat or a cold sweat, but I remember I was sweating whenever they were around.

Not really, Mac OS has an equivalent application for just about anything short of random little obscure stuff. Being "excluded" hasn't really been an issue since the OS9 days.

I smell what youre cookin - but I wouldnt abandon Windows altogether, mostly because of the games.

FPSs like Battlefield 2 are my thing and until the PS3s and Xbox360s are rolling out better input methods for those kind of games, ill stick to PCs for most of my gaming.
Where the consoles succeed for me are with the likes of SuperDuper Street Fighter Omega 17.

As for the google earth example - google maps does nearly as good a job.

What you get is a better OS, first and foremost. One that is exceedingly stable and easy to use.

There is no good OS for anything. If you want to play games, windows, networking etc., some flavour or UNIX/LINUX/BSD. the only good thing for me is that mac has bsd built in. But still I can build a box and install BSD for free.

Customizable? Not in the sence I need, I just want to go out and but cheap harddrives for backup.

Of course! Look at that product design.[/qoute]
I am looking for innovation if factor not form.

Neo, I bet if you had a Mac, you'd really enjoy it.

I had a mac 12 years ago, yes it could do a bit of graphics, now I need something that can do a lot more. Especialy for programs that I need to keep myself sane limewire doesnt cut it.

No one in the know groups BSD with Linux. Theo De Raadt will be coming to visit you with a bat.

NeoNecroNomiCron wrote:that mac has bsd built in.

No it doesn't. It's a BSD personality set atop a much-modified mach kernel. Now that Jordan Hubbard (FreeBSD) and Dominic Giampaolo (BeOS) work for Apple on OS X, things are running much smoother (I'm not sure who fixed up the VFS code in Tiger, but it's lightning fast in comparison to 10.3.X).

NeoNecroNomiCron wrote:But still I can build a box and install BSD for free.
And it looks like shit, runs only a single processor, etc...

Forget the kool-aid. I've programmed Windows, Linux, BeOS, and Mac OS X, and I have to say as both a developer and as a user Mac OS X is hands-down the best desktop OS I've ever used.
