I don't enjoy giving lectures to university or high school students in Japan...One student declared that all bears should be shot as soon as they come out of their dens because they were dangerous...and "no use" to humans. In a better world, I'd dress him up in a seal skin and put him out on the ice off Baffin Island or somewhere. He could be an experiment in polar bear usage of human debris. I'd rather talk to cabbages than to most students in Japan. Even while haranguing government officials, I can usually break the tension and raise a few laughs. But with university and high school students in Japan? Forget it...I can only ask in despair: What on earth are schools doing to kids in Japan?

A survey by the Organization of Economic Cooperation and Development in December showed a drop in reading ability of Japanese high school students in 2003 from three years before, while another international organization's poll showed Japanese eighth-graders had slipped,,,

Upon the arrest of his daughter, who is pregnant, for the use of stimulant drugs in Tokyo in February, noted author C.W. Nicol was quoted in the press as being “shocked and sad.”
The story, according to weekly tabloid Shukan Asahi Geino (Mar. 23), does not get any more heartwarming. A reporter for the magazine visited the 31-year-old in prison in Tokyo to follow up on suspicions that she had been working at a commercial sex business in Osaka for the past few years.
“Yes, yes, I worked there,” said Arisa Nicol, attired in a gray sweatshirt, during the reporter’s presence at a visiting room at a police station in early March.

Tokyo Reporter | September 17, 2017
TOKYO (TR) –The Tokyo District Court last week handed a prison term that includes a probationary period to the daughter of noted author C.W. Nicol over the use of stimulant drugs, reports the Sankei Shimbun (Sept. 12).
On September 12, presiding judge Naohiro Hayashi handed Arisa Nicol, 32, a prison term of two years and two months for the use of kakuseizai, or stimulant drugs. Of that sentence, four months will be under probation.
“With a previous conviction for the use of stimulant drugs, [the defendant] has a strong dependency,” the judge said.
The prosecution had sought a three-year term.
