http://www.forecasts.org/yen.htm

And if you are really curious:

http://www.forecasts.org/data/data/EXJPUS.htm

The historical fluctuations of the yen from like 1971 or something...

That can give you some insight into your decision. BUt you have to take into context the future... based on the past... which can be quite iffy.

I say if you can wait, wait. If not, then go ahead and exchange away.

The fluctuation is so minute.. I mean like 5-10 yen difference really won't make that big of a difference when you're converting something like 100,000 yen. When you're exchanging in the millions, then it will start to make sense. These days, it is very stable and you won't see huge depreciation/appreciation of the yen like they used to.

I couldnt be happier with the dollar. Koizumi and his postal reforms/up coming elections (amongst other things) are weakening the yen
The Kiwi dollar is at an almost all time high - this is particularly good news for a kiwi (like myslef) who is coming to japan soon and needs to by yen

thanks koizumi
With the elections a month away the economy/the yen is going to be unstable for a while yet

Yeah. I'm flying off to Australia today and need to convert before I go.

Would there be any point to getting my traveler's checks in US$, or should I just get all my spending T/C in Aussie$?

Why get hit twice by exchanging into $US 1st?

BTW I just went to Greece via Japan ('cause they're so close  ) and simply used my Aussie debit card to withdraw local money from ATMs in both countries - no travellers cheques. It just gets debited from my account back home.

Assuming you have a bank account and ATM card, check with your bank (or the back of the card) & see if they're affiliated with "Cirrus" or something similar and you can just hit an ATM when you get here.

Of course you may feel some added warmth in having some T/C but that's a matter for you. Subject to the fee system for your bank, you should probably also avoid lots of little withdrawls, if there's a flat fee each time.

My Ozzie mate said US$ are easy to convert there, but when checking the Narita info today, I saw I can get Aussie$ TCs, so that's what I'll do.

I've got a debit card, but prefer not to use it much, since that's my Ebay/Vodafone money.
