Asahi: Dismal showing by ozeki
Kaio, Chiyo present no challenge to Asashoryu. The gap between leader Asashoryu and the closest competitor has widened to the point that the title race is no longer interesting, so the focus is on how individuals are faring. The main culprits here are the ozeki and their collective collapse. The greatest disappointment is Kaio, who pulled out after Day 9 with a shoulder injury.
He went in as a contender for promotion to yokozuna, but came up short once more. He lost again to rival Kotomitsuki, who beat him on the first day of the previous tournament, and again on Day 7 this time out. It is as though he has lost his will to fight. The fact that the fourth loss squelched his hopes of promotion also was a factor. He became more aware of his injured left shoulder, which seemed to grow more painful. Against Kokkai, he showed no desire to win.
His stablemaster had to accept his decision to quit and Kaio finishes with a losing record, dropping from possible promotion to potential demotion. At 32, it is hard to imagine Kaio making the grade now. Kotozakura became a yokozuna at age 33, but he had far more desire than Kaio.

Interesting profile of Asashoryu:

LA Times: He's Put Tradition on Its Ear
At a mere 308 pounds, Asashoryu is not the biggest of the big-bellied men waddling around the dirt ring of this chilly sumo training stable, looking for someone to slam up against. But he is definitely the baddest...a lot more...

I wrote:The announcers didn't make any mention of it but I think after the victory he gave Wakanosato an unnecessary shove. It looked unsportsmanlike to me. Did anyone else notice that?

LA Times wrote:he ends fights with an extra shove for emphasis to opponents already out of the ring.

At a recent practice session, Asashoryu took it upon himself to punish another wrestler whose work ethic was deemed to have faltered. As the wrestler with layers of fat strained against another in the ring, Asashoryu delivered a series of savage two-handed whacks to the back of his thighs, first with a bamboo pole, then with a metal shovel.

The rikishi screamed and collapsed in agony with almost every blow, while the other wrestlers taunted him to get back up and fight. (Who's going to dare tell the yokozuna to put down the shovel?) When the victim retreated to a corner of the stable, Asashoryu cracked him over the head with the bamboo pole. Six times.

The session ended with the wrestler whimpering and rolling in pain on the dirt floor.

Asashoryu called it a "whipping of love :love2: " arguing that the rikishi would emerge stronger and happier for having "overcome" the pain.

Well he did it again. I wonder how he would have done in the old four yokozuna days; Ake Mushashi and Taka/Waka.

It takes a one to beat one. Gaijin I mean. Asashoryu has been beaten by the Bulgarian Kotooshu and today he lost a really close one to Kokkai (I love that big pink Georgian). Both were great fights. Did anyone else see him get slammed on his head by Kotooshu? These days I've been cheering against Asashoryu. He's a dick.

Shukan Post reported the rumour in summer 2003. It was picked up by Mark Schreiber for the Japan Times "Tokyo Confidential" column which is reprinted here by the UB Post.

Asashoryu scheduled for further examination for stress

Former sumo-wrestler and Takasago stable coach, Takasago, said Monday that Mongolion grand champion Asashoryu, who was diagnosed with acute stress last week, will soon be scheduled for another psychiatric examination to determine his condition, the Kyodo News reports.

Asashoryu has asked for allowance to recuperate from the stress, which struck the wrestler after he was suspended from two grand sumo tournaments, in his native Mongolia. The Japan Sumo Association are currently considering his request.

I think some Chrysanthemums are worried about this situation, too, because Japan has its eyes on Mongolia's natural resources. At least that's what some people seemed to be saying on a talk show.

There was a lot of talk early on about the Japanese Government and Government of Mongolia sponsorship and endorsement of the charity soccer event that the Yokozuna appeared in. That talk all suddenly disappeared when the media started firing heavy salvos at him for skipping the sumo tour with a note from his doctor.

Like the guy or not, I still think it is because because he is an FG that the steam has continued in the boiler this long. It's really nothing compared to some of the scandals they've had in sumo in the past.

I agree that being an FG, and one so good at what he does, is a(the) cause of his unpopularity with some people in the land of Chrysanthemums.
A bit off topic, but when he wins a bout, as he often does, he seems to kind of glare at something or someone. I thought I heard once he was doing that to one of the officials. Maybe there is nothing to it, but have you heard anything about that?

Never heard of that one, but I always thought it was funny how he would stare down his opponent before facing off and he would NEVER brake his stance to go grab the salt UNTIL his opponent did. I loved how he would spank his belt really loud before heading out too.

I hate the guy though...

I met Roho, Kokkai, and Hakurozan before. They were pretty cool, but remind me never to attempt to drink shots of vodka again. :hehe:

Now he has a tax problem The Asahi is saying (Japanese) that Asa failed to report 100 million yen in TV appearance fees in the three years up to 2005. Including penalties, he'll be on the hook for 30 million yen.

<rant>

Man, I am SOOO annoyed by people that play the "utsu" card. Depression this, depression that, blah, blah, blah. I had a colleague that suddenly lost contact with EVERYONE so that he couldn't be reached regardless of what meetings were scheduled, etc. I mean, this guy was on the payroll for close to a fucking year and didn't show up for work because mgt was too fucking scared to do anything because they were afraid of the legal action that could be taken for terminating someone under these circumstances. It turns out one night while in Roppongi, this cocksucker had the balls to show up to a nomikai while COMPLETELY tweaked out.

</rant>

I just think half of this depression shit is bullshit, but I just suppose it's hard for me to understand how anyone could get that bent up to require "medical" attention.

Fuck, I hate work..... :p

Mongolian sumo star returns to Japan, apologizes for creating stir over skipped exhibition

The bad boy of sumo returned to Japan, vowing to clean up his act and restore his image.

After a two-month stay in his native Mongolia, Asashoryu held a news conference in Tokyo on Friday to apologize for a series of transgressions that sullied the image of Japan's ancient sport.

Did anyone else catch the final day of the Summer Basho today? Hakuho and Asashoryu looked they they were about to come to blows after their match. Basically what happened is Asashoryu kept pushing Hakuho after he was down and Hakuho came up with a big shoulder check, so Asashoryu reponded with a little slap (really more of a tap) in the face. Then they both were up staring each other down for a couple of seconds. I can't find a mention of it in the J news yet (haven't looked that hard though).

Asashoryu gave all the haters in Japan a big middle finger by putting the fucking smack down on the competition this time and bringing in another tournament win today.

You are naive, boy.
Other wrestlers was quietly pressured behind the scene not to win this Mongolian. Remember that this Mongo has deep connections with yakuzas through his mother country's uranium mine interest.
And no need for you to be pleased with this Mongo's victory.
This is totally other people's affair for you.

I don't buy that. Asa is far more technically skilled than the rank and file train shovers in the top division. If anything he the one most like to take a dive so that some borderline wrestler can avoid demotion or so the yaks can clean up on anyone retarded enough to bet on Sumo.

Sumo grand champion Asashoryu announces divorce
(Mainichi Japan) July 6, 2009---
Sumo Yokozuna Asashoryu has divorced his wife, the Mongolian wrestler announced Monday in a message on his official blog....
<big snip>
.....
Asashoryu, whose real name is Dolgorsuren Dagvadorj, had been classmates with Tamir at junior high school and they got married after starting a serious relationship in about 2002. Their wedding reception, held in Tokyo in the summer of 2004, was broadcast on television. They have a 6-year-old daughter and a 3-year-old son.
However, over the past two years, the two had been living apart, and during last year's sumo tour to Mongolia, in which Asashoryu played a major role, Tamir was not seen publicly.

Sumo's Asashoryu criticised for being "podgy"

Sat Jul 11, 2009 5:04pm BST
TOKYO (Reuters) -
Sumo bad boy Asashoryu, no stranger to public criticism, has been labelled "podgy" in a bizarre attack on the volatile Mongolian.
A popular former wrestler now working as a TV commentator accused Asashoryu of being flabby, even though his 150-kilogram frame is relatively small for the sport.
"He looks podgy," Shuhei Mainoumi told Japanese media.
"He doesn't look as buff. When I got flabby I hated being naked and showing off my body -- he looks a bit like that."...more....

JSA to grill Asashoryu over assault

Kyodo News
Asashoryu is set for a fresh grilling by the Japan Sumo Association and could be in more hot water after a man told police he was seriously assaulted by the controversial Mongolian grand champion during a drunken tirade.

The weekly magazine Friday reported last week that Asashoryu, 29, was "sloshed" before slugging an acquaintance, who was originally believed to have been his manager, outside a pub in downtown Nishiazabu in the early hours of Jan. 16.

However, the weekly magazine Shukan Shincho has reported in its edition that hit newsstands Thursday that the actual man attacked in the incident, which occurred during the recently concluded New Year bout, was in charge of a dance club where the yokozuna had been drinking.

The JSA said Thursday it will be demanding an explanation from Asashoryu in the wake of the fresh allegations.

On Monday, Asashoryu admitted to drunken behavior as reported in Friday and was reprimanded along with his stable master, Takasago, by JSA Chairman Musashigawa.

"A reprimand is not punishment. We want a report of what actually happened so we can get to the bottom of this as quickly as possible," said JSA member Jun Yoshino. "Depending on the outcome, the penalty may need to be more than a warning."
