only a fool climbs mt fuji....

Postby karekora » Sun Aug 14, 2005 10:53 pm

hi, im planning a trip up to the top of mount fuji before this years official hiking season ends.

ive got some decent climbing shoes, and i know to bring food, water, torch, layers of clothing, lots of cash for those expensive 'ive climbed fuji!' omiyage, hat, gloves, camera, sunglasses, suncream...

worrying im missing something important..

anybody climbed mt fuji here?? Im going from kawaguchicho 5th station, apparantely the most commonest route. What should i need or be prepared for??

i know that people say you can climb fuji in sneakers and in my guidebook it advertises it as "a must for any decent hill walker", but i know that its a mountain all the same. also heard of the french guy found dead at the bottom earlier in july...

so, want any advice. thanks!

Don't climb with people who haven't trained and who sprain their ankles on the way down, causing you to miss the bus, spend all your money on a close-by overpriced ryokan and manage to be rescued by chance by the American navy who had come to find some of their missing members who got lost.

On the other hand I found it a pretty OK climb - not so steep just long. The way down is quite rocky mind you.

Some of the other people I climbed with got altitude sickness. Try to become a chainsmoker before then so you don't.

Actually I climbed it on exactly this night 7 years ago - the eve of my Birthday. Out of the 5 that went I was the only at the summit for sunrise swigging the bottle of champagne I'd brought.

It's worth it for the sunrise. That was bloody amazing.

Good luck!

I climbed when I was there a couple weeks ago. The climb itself was not too bad, as long as you're in shape and take your time.. but we made the mistake of over-preparing. Our packs were a little too heavy and my feet were not in the best of shape on the trip down.. it was more a problem of my personal foot structure.. so..
Just make sure that you pick a good night to climb, are prepared, but not overprepared, and make sure you're body is adequately taken care of - wraps, blister prevention, etc. Walking sticks really help too. Don't rush.Image

I've done it 3 times. You sound pretty well prepared to me. A good thing to bring is a rain coat, and a light change of clothes (dry t-shirt, socks and undies) in a garbage bag.

I have actually climed it 3 1/2 times, the 1/2 time is what makes me say to bring the above items. I went up with 3 girls, and it was drizzling as we started up. Somewhere beyond the 6th station is started raining, and by the time we got to the 7.5 station (there are a couple half stations on the fujinomiya side) it was insane rain. Felt like a typhoon, and we were exposed on the side of the mountain.

So we ended up turning back and hiked really slowly back down to the bathrooms just above the parking lot. Unforunately, everything in my backpack was soooaked from the rain, and I didnt have a dry change of clothes. That really sucked, cause I was cold.

Its also good to bring some water, chocolate, and maybe some onigiri or other food to eat on the way. Its ridiculously expsensive the higher up the mountain you go.

And lastly, a beanie (or touque if you are Canadian). You will want one on the top of the mountain.

Half of children climbing Mt. Fuji suffer mountain sickness
Mainichi News - 毎日新聞 | June 30, 2013
Fifty-five percent of children who tried to climb Japan's highest peak in summer of 2012 and 2013 suffered mild mountain sickness, a medical organization has revealed.
The Japanese Society of Travel Medicine surveyed a total of 245 children aged 5 to 12 years who were descending to the fifth station on Mount Fuji in August 2012 and the same month the following year. The survey was conducted in a total of six days at the fifth station. Most of the children were climbing with family members.

Some in the United States Marine Corps tried to combine the word "Japs" with "apes" to create a new description, "Japes", for the Japanese; this neologism never became popular.[2]

Unfortunately, it is already a word with a different meaning, so you are likely to be misunderstood. The Oxford dictionary site also claims the same meaning in American English, but I'm not so sure that it has widespread usage, if any at all (meaning: I have never noticed it in any of my extensive exposure to Hollywood output).

Using the word would, however, be a jolly jape, what ho! How about it, chaps?

The funny thing about "Jap" is most Japanese don't find it offensive, it's mostly those "Asian American" groups that get their panties in a twist about it. Yeah, it has it's history and there is even in the "Amejin" term as well but seems like such a stretch to get bent out of shape about. If you think of how many things here are referred to as bei(米)this and bei that, you can understand why most Japanese have trouble with understanding why "Jap" is supposed to offend them. On the other hand, nearly every Japanese I've asked, seem to think "Gaijin call us yellow monkeys" or "yellow cabs." While I've heard the "Yellow cab" term used jokingly, I've never once seen a FG call Japanese a "yellow monkey."

Abbreviation+propaganda=offensive for some... For me, it's the purest form of newspeak. Really a textbook case... Governmentally backed by its own ministry of truthiness...

As is, by french standard jap is just an abbreviation. Since the US apparently used it negatively to designate 'japanese person, who shoot at you' I had trouble considering it at the same level as 'nigger' or 'negro'...

I think the bestestest offensivestest word evar for them local was 'rice nigger' I don't remember where I saw it, but it was certainly one of those dark corners of the interwab reeking of vomit and hobo piss...

Sidenote/ I hope Me Julie never hear the word yellowcab, because 1- i'm never gonna be able to remember the etymology that I don't even know anyway... And 2- it's totally the kind of expression she will find funny and try to use every other day... (I once nicknamed her former lab director "Mengele" because of his borderline practices... And since then I never once heard her calling him by his real name in any conversation with her colleagues...)

Wrong as usual. When Vincent Chin was beat to death by Detroit auto workers for taking their jobs he was called "Jap" among other things. That is what really led to the push by Asians in America to recognize it as a racial slur.

It was also use to negatively describe US citizens who were stripped of their property and rounded up in concentration camps. Besides "negro" just means black in Spanish but what the fuck does that have to do with American English?

Because when jap was written on wwii war poster it was to give a warm and fuzzy feeling...

Don't the example you gave just make my point side witht the opinion I was trying to convey in an unapologetically broken english ? Chronologically speaking ?

As for negro it's used in french as derogative a bit worse than negre, and aint it used in english as "negro spirituals" ?

[edited to compensate the aim by factoring in more potential butthurt or PMS or whatever it is today that will/would have put SJ's panties in a twist]

Don't they have kindergartens here where kids get a prize for going the whole year without wearing a shirt?
