Tezuka's family elected not to make anything of this because they believed that Tezuka took inspiration from Disney. The President of Canon, Mitarai, wrote afterwards that this was a mistake and a reflected Japan's continued misunderstanding of the importance of intellectual property

Here's a worthwhile excerpt from Schodt's "Dreamland Japan" book, about the Lion King issue: http://www.stonebridge.com/DREAMLAND/dreamland.html

Honestly, who gives a flying fuck about who stole what from who? They're kiddie cartoons made by studios that are in the business of recycling old fairy tales, this is what they DO. The last person older than age 7 that I saw get whipped up into a frenzy about this issue was the notorious net.kook T*m*y*ki T*n*k*.

I think that is partly the point. In the Schodt piece that yellowlightman mentions, he points out the give and take in the industry and that's how Tezuka's family saw it. What Mitarai saw, however, was a Japanese company walking away from claiming a share of a half billion dollar asset which he knew from his own business experience that no US company would ever do.

I remember Stephen Fry, who reads the Harry Potter audio books, speaking about going on a signing tour in the US with JK Rowling. He noticed that every time a fan tried to hand over a present to the author, a minder stepped in and intercepted the package which Fry thought seemed very rude. He learned later that some fans would try to give an author story ideas and so lawyers insist that there be no direct proven contact which a crazed fan could later use as evidence that his or her ideas had been stolen.

Well there you go. I continually admonish people, do not take offense on behalf of other people. Tezuka was perfectly well capable of taking offense at being "ripped off," and does not need a horde of pissed-off-by-proxy otaku who want to fight a battle he has no interest in.

As you think so man, but when you found some like this , you'll have to guess a lot about creation or give up your job.
Intellectual property is just a northern american creature as too many others protecting themselves&overshadow the others.
