Bringing alcohol in

Postby ichigo partygirl » Sun Aug 14, 2005 6:02 pm

hey all u have a question bout bringing alcohol into japan. if im right the duty free allowance is 3 x 750ml. How much alcohol can i bring in if i have paid tax on it here in NZ. And will there be an additional tax charged on it in japan.

Thanks - this is the first time im old enough to bring alcohol in to Japan so i want to bring as much as i can

Anyway, to answer the question, yes three 750ml (approx) bottles is the maximum you can bring in duty free. More than that and you'll have to pay duties on the excess. But spirits like vodka and whiskey are pretty cheap here anyway compared to most countries, perhaps even cheaper than NZ, so don't sweat it too much by lugging bottles of them around. On the other hand, good quality NZ wines will be much more expensive here in Japan, if you can find them at all - so bring a few of those over.
Mr Kobayashi: First, I experienced a sort of overpowering feeling whenever I was in the room with foreigners, not to mention a powerful body odor coming from them. I don't know whether it was a sweat from the heat or a cold sweat, but I remember I was sweating whenever they were around.

Your info on amounts and properties is correct. I think what Buraku is saying is just don't try to bring anything into Japan that the dogs can sniff.

You can get any of that here anyway later and much more safely.

Don't do the crime...time, etc.

If you never declare your posession (translation: deny that you have any alcohol), then you'll just get through with no problem. And I have never seen sniff dogs at Narita before, though it's not worth bringing in any dr*gs to this country. That will result in automatic deportation and BAN.. just ask Paul McCartney.

Bringing in alcohol isn't really worth it because the bottles are heavy and most of the stuff you can buy them here. Though they don't seem to have the larger sized 1L bottles of hard liquor and some of the more rare essentials such as goldschlager.

I strenuously discourage you from taking wine in particular, the bottles are notoriously thin and prone to breakage. Plus, wine is low in alcohol so you're basically bringing a big bottle of mostly-water that will be gone in one sitting. Hard liquor is a better deal since 1 bottle lasts for longer, but then you're putting a lot more eggs in one basket, as I discovered to my regret when I landed at Narita with my baggage leaking Jameson's Whiskey and Royal Salute. Oh that was a pricey disaster, and embarassing since now I had no gifts that I'd planned to give to some friends.
So if you really want to do this, I'd suggest hand-carrying them to your destination, which is a huge pain in the ass, or else packing them in wooden crates in your luggage. No, cardboard and bubble wrap won't do it, your luggage will end up underneath tons of other luggage, and get crushed. Plus baggage handlers are apes, they throw your luggage around.

If all they are concerned are the luggages, then just bring them in your pockets, right?

i would never bring illegal shit in or not declare. If i got caught not only would i get fined, probably charged and maybe deported. I would get kicked out of university in Japan and in New Zealand. ITs really not worth the risk

And Charles i know wine isnt strong but thats not why i drink wine. NZ has some of the best wine in the world. It is meant to be savoured, drunk with freinds over meals. If i wanna get trashed ill drink some 42 below or bacardi or the like

I never encouraged anyone of bringing in anything illegal. There are consequences to breaking the law and I was only suggesting it for the sake of discussion. Anyone with half of the brain would understand that and not REALLY shove things up their asses to pass the air port customs.

If drugs are your alley, you can always resort to those fake.. i mean "legal" drugs in shibuya streets, but that's a whole another topic.

Well, that wasn't really my point. I just think it's weird to basically lug around a big bottle of mostly-water in a fragile bottle. Too much effort to transport it, too much risk of it not getting there intact, for too little payoff.

42 below, is that a drink?
Bacardi (151) would do the trick

You can get a huge range of wine here from all over - and it's not so expensive (much much cheaper than you can in Singapore for starters).

Haven't seen FRangelico here though - if you are fond of that you might want to bring a bottle to spice up your hot chocolates in the wintertime.

I wouldn't sweat bringing in wine. I came back from Australia this morning with three bottles and got waved through, even with two of them sitting in the top of my cart in a carry box.

I hadn't planned on bringing any back at all, but my best friend in Oz lives in the Barossa Valley. He and his parents insisted I go out with them for a day of wine-tasting and I really got into it. Picked up some good stuff and jotted down a few more to try and hunt up here in Tokyo.

Bring them in your carry on. In many places, they won't even allow you to pack alcohol in your baggage for fear of leakage. I wouldn't bother declaring it as it gives customs officers a green light to rummage through your underwear.

I personally just returned to Japan with 3 bottles of ice wine and found that the limiting factor is just how bottles you can stuff in your carry on.

It's so easy to get it through the mail, it's not even funny. And if you want to carry it in on your own, just get a nice piece of hash, wrap it up well, and shove it up against the lid of a shampoo bottle or something. Alternative method: take apart a spent film roll, fill with goodies, close, place in lead-film bag. They only ever glance at the things if they bother to care in the first place.
