I wonder how this is going to play out? The comparisons with overseas athletes are interesting. Sport has become increasingly professional so denying an athlete the right to compete has to be for good reasons or else it can become a restraint of trade. There is an international body which offers arbitration when an athlete feels a national body is unfairly discriminating by not selecting them for competition.
In France, a rugby player came up positive for cocaine. There was no argument that he took it, and he apologized, but it transpired that the testers were not legally permitted to test him for that drug so he received no ban. The selectors were put under pressure to "make an example" but they decided they needed to consider everyone eligible for selection and he continued to play.
In the UK a few years ago, two international footballers were on trial for racially-motivated assault. Both were controversially found not guilty of the major charge while one was found guilty of the lesser charge of affray. Both were deemed elligible to represent their country - the first player immediately, the second after completing his sentence.
The Satoya case seems odd. When the reports first came out about her arrest, it seemed that we were getting news as the case moved to the prosecutors since the incident took place a month ago. If, as Marvin says, she was released without charge then she has committed no crime. So who is the source of the story? It can only be the 911 staff or else the police who, in any event, can only have got their story from 911 staff.
If Satoya herself confirmed their story then it seems likely she would have been charged. As this thread says, the geinojin have been falling foul of the law rather publicly of late and as this thread illustrates, the police do like confessions. In this case, the police may not have wanted to be in the position of holding Satoya to get her to confess to allegation made by FGs or else they decided that there was enough doubt about what had happened that no charges would stick. The idea that she assaulted police when they arrived seems unlikely since that would almost certainly have seen her held and charged.
So although Satoya has apologized for causing a scene, she doesn't seem to have done anything illegal and we only have a magazine account of her behaviour to go on. Her sponsors can drop her but that isn't a strong basis on which to deny her a place in the national team. She may decide that she was in the wrong and accept the punishment but many international athletes would appeal.

Kaikyaku helped Tae Satoya pick up a gold medal at the 1998 Nagano Winter Olympics, but spreading her legs for an entirely different purpose in a Roppongi nightclub last month has now got her in all sorts of trouble following an expose in Shukan Bunshun (3/10).

Roppongi is known for attracting large numbers of foreigners. On its main street is a club called 911, where loud club music booms out and swarms of men and women bump along to the beat. Things were a little different in the wee hours of Feb. 8, however.

"All of a sudden, about 10 uniformed cops poured into the club one after another and headed to the VIP room. There were about 50 customers in the joint, but a cop stood at the entrance to the VIP room and wouldn't let anybody in. People were gathered around trying to find out what had happened. The first person they escorted out of the VIP room was a young white guy. After a while, a cop came out carrying this young woman over his shoulder like a lump of wood. She was absolutely blotto. This woman dangling off the cop was Olympic gold medallist Tae Satoya," a woman at 911 at the time tells Shukan Bunshun....more...

Yeah but a total pinhead as a coach: take your meal ticket out to a bar allow her to get completely out of control while you're trying to get laid -doesn't strike me as very professional.

An employee from 911 said that somebody claiming to be "an associate of Satoya's" had called the club, taken complete responsibility for the incident and offered to pay compensation for any damage, as well as the medical costs of the bouncer injured when dealing with the berserk gold medallist


Any guess as to who the associate of Satoya was? :twisted:

Tae Satoya, the freestyle moguls skier who caused a stir over her involvement in a drunken spat at a Tokyo establishment in February, is to participate in a race in Australia approved by the International Ski Federation, it has been learned. Tatsuo Hayashi, head of the freestyle section of the Ski Association of Japan said he had talked with Satoya about her plans for this season on Monday, and decided to allow her to participate in a race in Australia in August and train alone under the same coach she had last year. "All I can do is (do my best to) provide results for fans and the people involved," she was quoted as telling association officials. Fuji Television, which sponsors Satoya, 29, temporarily suspended her after news of the drunken spat broke.

Investigators accuse Satoya and the restaurant worker of getting into a fight at a restaurant in Tokyo's Roppongi district in the predawn hours of Feb. 8. Satoya allegedly hit and kicked the worker, while the worker is accused of hitting her. Neither party suffered injuries in the incident.
