New Canon DSLR and 24-105 f4L lens

Looks like Canon will release a new 13MP full-frame camera and a great new 24-105 f4 "L" series lens with IS.

Man, I can't believe the 5D rumor mill has spread to FG!! Well, I agree that the material everybody's circulating finally appears to be legitimate rather than a hoax (but of course not a peep from Canon yet). Sounds like the 5D is really aimed a bit more at pros and is basically (if you believe the leaked specs) a full-frame version of the 20D, with a few other small enhanements. Major price breakthrough if it truly sells at half the price of the 1Ds MkII. But still too pricey (and not necessary) for amateurs like me.

That lens sounds nice - finally, maybe a nice general purpose walkaround L lens. If the price is right I might think about replacing my EF-S 17-85IS.

Of course this will all sell for significantly less overseas than here in Japan, so if I do any shopping, I'll be waiting until my next trip home.

Canon EOS 5D, full-frame 12.8 megapixel
The biggest surprise of the day (not) will be Canon's much-leaked EOS 5D. Yes, the specifications floating around for the last two weeks were accurate, this camera slots in above the EOS 20D but below the EOS-1D series with its full-frame (35 mm negative size) 12.8 megapixel CMOS sensor. Other key specifications; 3.0 fps continuous shooting, spot metering, custom settings mode, Picture Style parameters, 2.5" wide viewing angle LCD monitor, marginally larger than the EOS 20D, USB 2.0 High-speed, compatible with WFT-E1 wireless transmitter. The EOS 5D is certainly unique and will no doubt be of great interest to a great variety of photographers. The EOS 5D will be available in October priced at $3299 (US) / €3459 (EU).

That's a pretty steep price...

For me, yeah. But if you're a photographer who needs a full-frame digital camera, it's half the price of the only other alternative on the market (Canon's EOS 1Ds).

I'm not sure as many people actually need full-frame as those who think they do. But anyway, this new camera is targeted squarely at the pro market, many of whom will look at the camera as a half-price backup for their 1Ds. Or a much cheaper & more compact camera for non-studio, non-sports work.
