PSP Pixel Issues, Any Advice?

Postby Pal_msy » Thu Sep 15, 2005 4:54 am

Hey,
I bought a PSP at Yodobashi Camera about 20 days ago and Ive noticed it has quite a number, about 8 or so, dead pixels that show up white when the screen is black. I read up on Sony of Japan`s policy on dead pixels and apparently if there are four within a square centimetre then they will replace it and I have at least 5 in a cluster that should get a replacement but I dont really want to have to wait weeks or months for it to come back if i can avoid it. I have thrown out the box but kept the stamped part of the box that is proof of purchase and still have all accessories. Is there any way I can get Yodobashi to replace it? Any suggestions to what I should do?
Thanks

if the red/green/blue vid on that link dosent work:

i brought my 1st sony digital camera (which had succumbed to a fault) by the customer service dept on the 8th? floor of the sony showrooms in ginza about 3 years out of warranty and they fixed it free of charge and had it back to me the next day.
in your case they might just swap it out, yodobashi may do the same?

re: Taro's trick

The PSP box has a sticker attached to the outside with the serial numbrer of the enclosed unit. Since you've tossed your original box, you no longer have the sticker with your PSP's serial number on it. (Of course, I'm sure Avery makes a printable label in the approximate size you'd need...)

And Taro, really. You try to ding me for wanting to violate a sales contract with Vodafone and then come out and advocate (and admit to) retail fraud? :?

As long as you have the proof of purchase in Japan it should be OK. Just act real disappointed that the unit did not work and they will replace it as they don't want a bad reputation.

Thanks for the input.
The part of the box i kept states the model type of the psp 1000-k and says the date I bought it. I actually bought it at yodobashi about 2 hours away from where I live, reckon I can just take it into a local one, say shinjuku, and they would be able to help me?
PS anyone a fan of winning eleven? comes out today on psp. straight 9s from famitsuu aswell.
cheers

I have read reports (from sources I trust) that sometimes you can rejuvenate a dead pixel by gently pressing your fingertip against the dead spot, then gently rocking your finger back and forth, and up and down. Emphasis on the gently. You might want to put a piece of paper over the screen to keep your grubby fingerprints off it. Did I mention that you should press gently?
Of course it would be better to get a replacement unit if you can.

Not unless you unscrew the serial number part of the PSP apart and swap it with the new one's.

I bought a PSP from Tsutaya last sunday and had to return it because the battery would not charge. The manager started giving me the run around and actually tried to tell me that it was my fault, until I gave him the ol' 'I'm going to jump behind the counter and beat the silly out of you look.' He warmed up to me and replaced my unit once he saw that I was serious.

I guess I lucked out, I have no stuck pixels on mine.

By far, Blah Pete's method is the simplest and best.
Japanese retail outlets are not very strict on a return af a bad product in the first 30 days...And Sony be B-A-D.

In the case of worst-on-planet-earth-quality, sucks-butt Sony--- it's not fraud, it's just vengeance.
Every time a pass a Sony facilty here, I throw litter on it or at least pee on it.
I have had dozens of their products crap out on me, their computer software never works properly, and their warped if-I-like-it-you-MUST-like-it value system of "The-Sony-Way(tm)"is just fuckquing wrong.

PS: I'm really sorry about zinging you on Vodafone unlocking but you were asking the near-impossible.
Japanese-spec keitai have so many subtile diifferences from world-spec cellphones even the engineers in my former keitai prototype lab in Maybe-the-Largest Inc would buy new cellphones overseas rather than just unlock the Japan-spec ones from our joint-venture partner Ericsson. They said just wasn't worth the effort to save less than 150 bucks for unlocked Ericsson since it would only function as bare-bones SIM-card phone (when a Japanese-spec keitai is unlocked, 40% of its functionality is lost).

UPDATE!
Went to Yodobashi Shinjuku and they were really busy with the new white psp and winning eleven out in the last couple of days and there were about 50 people lined up at the counter and the one free person working there told me to go to Sony. So Ill try the Sony Building Ginza and see what they can do for me.

Japanese retail return policies...

Postby etto_neh » Fri Sep 16, 2005 4:24 pm

Don't remember where I read this, but is it not true that, once a retail chain buys something from the manufacturer (in Japan); that's it, no return? Meaning, that Yodobashi camera eats the cost of that returned PSP or whatever?

Maybe the larger stores will help ya, and I havent had to return anything yet here, but, as a rule, should I just avoid trying for low ticket items (especially since my Japanese lang skills are about that of a retarded four-year-old)?

Side note, my japanese wife who I met in the states let out about 724 high-pitched HEEE--!s when I bought a $12 cam battery at a Duane Reade drug store, opened it, and realized it was too small, turned right around and told the clerk who took it, reached back and grabbed the one I needed and slid it across the counter... all in about 15 seconds. She'd (wife) never thought to ever return anything to any store before. Kinda funny to me.
