I had one of these when I was in Japan.
Since I came home about a year ago, I had only used it a few times at first and then it sat on a shelf - since then I cant power it on - I tried to charge it using a stepdown converter (the plug only takes 110v and the sockets here distribute 220v) but I think the Li-Ion battery has gone byebye after sitting uncharged for a period of 3 months +
(so its dead: wont turn on - wont charge)

i dont plan on using it again - its cdma and was 'deactivated' by Au when i finished my contract with them

however, I have alot of my contact information ph numbers and email addresses on it and I want to get them off the phone and onto some paper or into an excel file

Maybe I could order a replacement battery from sony or a 3rd party?
or maybe theres a place i could send it to in japan?
Any ideas?

Do you think the information will still be stored even if the battery is totally dead?

It sounds like your battery is shot and needs a replacement. If you were still in Japan, then all you had to do was go to a keitai shop and they probably would have let you use their battery on the spot and let you write down the phone numbers and whatever.

The phone numbers are stored in a flash ram and so they will not go away even when the battery is dead so you should have no problem.

Pull the battery out and jot down the part number. Then go to Yahoo! Auctions (http://auctions.yahoo.co.jp/) and see if you can find someone selling a new one. You'd be surprised how many people sell keitai batteries. Likely the seller won't ship internationally so you might have to use a third party.

Cheers guys! - for some reason I hadnt ever tried to open the phone up - i think i presumed it was sealed & id have to jimmy it open...but it just slid off

searched the battery part number and found one going for y980 on rakuten and for y1190 on yahoo ^_^

if they wont ship international then i guess i can have it sent to a friend in japan and the they can mail it to me.

There is a slight chance that you might be able to buy the same battery locally. Sony does sell in european markets, and they tend to use the same battery in different models (sometimes). So it's worth taking the battery to your local Sony phone dealer (don't show them the phone or they'll freak). It's a longshot, but worth a try.

It seems this battery is only used in that model, I rang the European support line and the guy was borderline 'freaking'... but he was from Liverpool
..I was tempted to utter "Calm Down! Calm Down!"


..actually he was able to recommend a place (they dont have it but i emailed them to see if they could get it)
