Stereotypes about Japan

Because the topic of "what Japanese believe that annoys you" is quite common throughout all the forums on Japan, there is something I would like to know. Before getting mad by enumerating a long long list of ridiculous ideas about Gaijins, what are all the stereotypes about Japan you heard before going/living there?

There is full of them which are actually untrue.

Call me naive, but that's what I believed uptil recently.

The reality that this is only true towards their fellowcountrymen sank in later, so what can I say? Maybe the Japanese are human after all :D

I actually managed to save an article a few years back from the JT, an interview with Yukio Hattori (he's the gray-haired older guy on a lot of the cooking shows) entitled 'Food for Thought'. He explains why cooking shows predominate (cheap to produce) and lambasts the modern state of Japanese cooking habits (combini vs. home cooking). A good read; if you can't find it, let me know and I'll scan the article.
