My Car - Sold?

Postby Mike Oxlong » Thu Sep 22, 2005 10:12 am

I have an old car I'm selling - the shaken expired a couple days ago, along with the insurance. I have found a buyer (and it's understood the car is being sold as-is...the new shaken, etc. being the responsibility of the new owner), but he lives around 100 km away. In the old country, you can get temporary insurance to deliver the car...anything like that in Japan? What about the shaken?

The garage that services my car is adamant I can't drive it out there - it's illegal and impossible and fire & brimstone will rain down! I could just drive it out there in the middle of the night, lowering my risk of any problems...

Anyone with any experience or information relating to this situation?

I drove 18 months without a shaken. I even had the police void two parking tickets they put on my shaken-less car. I was "caught" when I went to Shin-Yokohama to renew my drivers licence. With my car parked in a police-only spot in front of the station, the desk clerk gave me the fire & brimstone will rain down speech when I asked him if I can drive it to my garage for a shaken. I told him thanks and drove the car another week while I did my own D.I.Y. shaken.

Bottom Line: J-cops never do anything. However, YMMV.

It's just sitting in my mechanic's parking lot now, waiting to move on. He offered to let me keep it there while I searched for a buyer. He took the paperwork inside to cancel the insurance the day after shaken was finished.

He can't refuse to return my paperwork and let me go on my way :?: Surely things aren't that draconian here...

The car is mechanically sound - not a danger on the road at all. The paperwork's the only thing not kosher...
