Bathhouse murals fading fast in Tokyo

Here's an interesting little traditional arts article from the Yomiuri... maybe we should have an Arts category on FG?

Bathhouse murals fading fast in Tokyo

Huge wall paintings of Mt. Fuji are a traditional fixture at Japanese bathhouses. People love to bathe at the foot of the famous mountain or with other well-known landmarks surrounding them.

These paintings, named penki-e after the Japanese word for the industrial paints artists use to create the huge murals, have been around for more than 90 years and have survived wars and depressions. An important part of Japanese pop art history, they are now in danger of disappearing.

During their heyday, more than 2,000 sentos, or public bathhouses, existed in Tokyo, and many of them had penki-e paintings on their walls. But now that most homes have their own bathtubs, the number of sentos has decreased to about 1,100, and penki-e are on the verge of disappearing.

"I hate to say this, but this art is destined to disappear. Nobody can prevent it," says professional penki-e painter Kiyoto Maruyama. "All I can do is paint as many works as possible for the rest of my life."

Maruyama has devoted 50 years of his life to painting the murals, and he is the most senior among the three remaining penki-e painters in Tokyo today... ...More...

I always wanted to do this to my apartment unit-bath but my complex probably won't approve it.

Tokyo sento

Postby genman » Wed Jul 27, 2005 1:22 pm

I went to three different sento in Shinjuku a few years ago. They all had murals of Mt. Fuji. I don't recall the condition they were in particularly. The places I went to didn't feel forlorn or dilipated, I suspected that the local government is subsidizing them somehow.

When staying at a hotel with a typically small shower/bath, it sure is nice to get out and go to a sento for a proper cleaning.

You know, I never really paid much attention to the penki-e murals until recently when I started reading about how the painters are dying off and the murals are likely to die out. And then I got to thinking about it, and I think every big sento I've been to had a mural of Fujisan, except ONE. It was at an onsen up at Lake Onuma, which had a rotemburo with a really impressive view of Komagatake, which was said to be the "Fujisan of Hokkaido." Now THAT was a really great sento.. but alas it was a pretty crappy onsen aside from that.

I can never tell about the class of the art. The soapy girl always blocks my views of the walls!

A sento is usually just a public bathing facility where you pay some nominal fee. If the heated water is provided by underground volcanic activity, you can get licensed as an onsen.

Only been to a couple of sentos in the Yokohama area. No murals that I can remember. :?:

TMC: Mt. Fuji runs out of steam at Japan's public bathhouses
Morio Nakajima, a 60-year-old muralist, may not be on the list of Japan's most famous artists, but he is still probably one of the most experienced when it comes to painting Mt. Fuji. While Japan is trying to get Mt. Fuji recognized as a World Heritage site, Nakajima, who has been obsessed with its beauty throughout his 41-year career, has just one problem on his mind these days -- his main canvas is disappearing. Unlike the well-known ukiyo-e works of Katsushika Hokusai and Utagawa Hiroshige, who were also inspired by Japan's highest peak, Nakajima's paintings do not hang on the walls of climate-controlled museums, but cover those of steamy local bathhouses, known as sentos, where the Japanese head to get clean and have a relaxing soak..."As an apprentice, I was only allowed to paint the blue sky for the first three years," he said...more...

Wasn't there some scandal where it was discovered that most of the onsen in Japan aren't really heated by volcanic activity but were basically hot tap water with some salt thrown in?

Yes, that's right. IIRC, a true onsen is checked by a certified official, and if they pass the test, they receive a license to operate as an official onsen.

The "Yu" character means hot water bath, which is used for sentos, not onsen.

CST you're right on the mark about the certification, but the Onsens are to a one, part of an Onsen kumiai or group, which in most areas are a strong Jichikai force. They can get all sorts of things by the certification process for licensing. The biggest scam is that they will truck in the water for the onsen (and so identify it) until the license process is completed, then it's out of the tap as usual! There are usually no surprise inspections without the kumiai knowing, so the operators that are cribbing on the Yu have plenty of time to get ready!
