I see this as a mis-step for Apple, and one of the few times they incorrectly anticipated what the public was hankering for.

Jim, Jim, Jim - you are missing the point!!!

Is this the only player on the market with 4gigs of flash?

I doubt you could even buy 4gigs of flash for what Apple are selling the Nano for.. methinks they have purchased the worlds supply of it to keep out the competition.

So it is not just the size that has impressed me - it is the FLASH!!!!

go FLASH go!!

went to a yakitori place here in paris - only semi-authentic as all the staff where chinese, but the food was excellent.
noticed a pattern here; that if theres one fondue restaurant on a street theres gonna be 12, same goes for japanese cuisine... & no convenience stores or pharmacies after 830!!

i recommend a drive around paris by night on a motorbike if your ever get the chance - c'est spectacular!

spotted so many japanese here, paris must be one of their top destinations for travel after hawaii, okinawa and london

went to apple expo - was interesting, but most exhibitors dont seem interested in the little people and only want to spend time with resellers (which is understandable: selling 1000 units vs 1)
some companies were selling G3 ibooks and powerbooks for e500, most ipod accessoires had 10 or 20 yoyos knocked off, spotted a couplle of bargains but of the bulky kind and didnt wish to have to lug them back to ireland.

oh, and i held the nano - its smudges and scratches liek a mofo but its soooooo cute - i simply must have twelvety of them!

ill be in london from thurs to mon if any fg's wanna meet for a pint, sillygirl, mulboyne.. or anyone else from around there
just PM me

The black ones really show the scratches and smudges (much like the black PSPs). That's why I went with the white nano.

Good to know, but the black ones still look better imo.

Warning to all potential Nano buyers: they scratch very easily.. Mine is still ok, but I've heard clothing can scratch the screen and front plate!

The condoms I mentioned in the above post are too damn expensive and not even available yet.. I've opted for some decal covers..

Didn't get this one, but looks cool..

You've been warned..

I left the plastic skin that it shipped with on the front of mine. The scroll wheel works fine through it, so it's no biggie to leave it on until some sleeves become available.

The black ones show scratches much more than the white ones. The black demo unit at Bic looked thrashed two days after they were put out.

The problem is that the scratches catch the light and show up as pure white, which is quite noticeable against a black background. They don't show up nearly as obviously on the white nano.

iPod Nano owners in screen scratch trauma

People slavering to get Apple's "impossibly small" iPod Nano into their sticky hands may want to pause a moment: those ahead of them in the queue have discovered that it's also unbelievably easy to scratch the screen, nixing its photo-displaying abilities.

Apple's discussion forums are already host to a 188-post thread on the topic, where people have spotted that the plastic used for the screen and front of the product is as sensitive as a Kate Moss sponsor.

....

Actually, not so for owners we've heard from. "I found that my black 4GB Nano scratched within minutes after peeling off the protective wrapper and wiping it with a cotton T-shirt. I put it in a pocket just once and it was inside the soft case that came with my third-gen iPod," comments poster number 188 in that monster Apple thread.

He's hardly alone: Register reader Matt Baker says "the plastic on the front panel scratches insanely easily", and comments that that hardly makes sense, "especially for a device that's sold in a large amount based on its appearance, and that launched at least a month before any cases for it will be available. Mine has lived either on a work surface, in a shirt pocket on its own, or (as demonstrated by Steve Jobs to be a suitable place when he launched it) in the change pocket of my jeans, again on its own."

Alcohol, Tobacco & Firearms should be the name of a store, not a government agency.

I checked out Bicamera the other day and they were all sold out and back-ordered.
These things are one hot tamales. I wonder how shitty the competitions are doing.

I don't know about Narita but I know that Kansai doesn't have incoming duty-free shops.

Just take your return ticket to Akihabara. AFAIK most of the shops there are also Duty Free if you have your passport and return ticket.

That's if they have any left.
I highly doubt they're available.

This depends on your visa status. 6-month or shorter visas (maybe only tourist and working holiday, not sure) can get this, but if your visa term is longer then no-go. It would only save the 5% consumption tax though, so it might not even be worth the bother for the 1390yen involved...

had to share this tip with my fellow FGs

Postby omae mona » Tue Sep 27, 2005 6:33 pm

I've been stressing out about how to select which 4GB out of my music collection I should keep on my nano. I found a solution I love. This will probably elicit rolling eyeballs and shouts of "duh" from most people, but it was enlightening for an iPod and iTunes newbie like me.

Sounds like the iPod Shuffle has an "autofill" feature that keeps the iPod populated with a random selection of music that hasn't been listened to recently. This feature doesn't exist on the nano, but can be simulated with smart playlists in iTunes.
http://www.macintouch.com/ipodnano.html
You can fake auto-fill using smart playlists. Here are the playlist settings I use for my Mini (which also doesn't support AutoFill):

- Select all songs not played in the last 30 days
- Limited to 3500 MB
- Selected randomly
- Live updating

I have the iPod configured to auto-update against this playlist. Initially, a random 3.5GB of songs are loaded. On subsequent updates, the last-played timestamps are updated, and the smart playlist updates itself (eliminating those songs that were played and replacing them with other songs from your library.)

Now if only I can figure out how to remove the screen scratches that resulted from my exhaling too close to the iPod, I'll be a completely happy camper.

I know this may sound like a stupid solution to the current problem, but what about hanging the Nano from your neck or putting it in your shirt pocket to keep it from getting scratched?

Well, if somebody had only told me that before I found out that the Nano could be permanently disfigured by contact with subatomic particles...

I forgot to mention that you still need to wear those white cloth gloves when handling because the POS scratches easily just by touching.

I was at Carrefour in Mino (North Osaka for those not in the area), and they had the 4GB Nano in stock @ 27,800yen. May or may not be availble in other Carrefours, but maybe worth a check if anyone is looking.
