Half-Japanese Tired of Being Sexy

From The Observer
'Wow. I love the band Cansei de Ser Sexy!! Hooray! They are obnoxious, poppy and screamy!' So wrote someone on the Bagderbag website. Cansei de Ser Sexy, which means Tired of Being Sexy (the best band name ever?), are a web phenomenon. I heard them on the Brazilian label Trama's extraordinary Tramavirtual site, which has more than 13,000 unsigned Brazilian bands and 35,000 songs on it and has had over a million free downloads...there are gems - like CSS, whom I caught in a small club in São Paulo. Their pop sensibility, spangly make-up and subversiveness bemused, charmed and totally won me over...they comprise six (or is it seven?) girls and a male drummer. The lead singer is called Lovefoxxx, who is half-Japanese and writes songs, usually in English, called 'Artbitch' and 'Meeting Paris Hilton'.

Saw them play at a small show in SF one time. Opening was the then unknown Elliott Smith. Fantastic show....

From the title, I thought this thread was about those haafu kids in that odd "We need kiss" commercial for some printer company. WTF was going through the minds of those media elites working in Dentsu, the Holiest of Holies of Japanese pop culture, when they came up with that campaign. Dingo just can't seem to suss out the connection between having 10-year-old kids dressed up like Gene Simmons, declaring "We need kiss!" and flogging computer printers.

Actually, it is for the Canon camera line "Kiss". They need "Kiss" to document their own youth. Annoying as hell though when they play the song continously at Bic Camera's camera floor. I'm amazed that the employees there can stop themselves from going postal...

The first time I was in Japan (circa '95), I was in Osaka and just wanted to see a local band -ANY local band- at one of the cooler live houses. So I picked up PIA, and found some obnoxious-sounding but inexpensive event at Fandango. To my shock, when I navigated my way through the maze of Soaplands and hostess bars, I found that the J-punk event had been rescheduled...to make way for a Half-Japanese concert at 4000 yen a pop. Oh the ironies of existence...
No, I didn't see them.
There is nothing more noble than impassioned nonsense.

Can someone tell me how to register on that Tramavirtual site? I can't find a register link anywhere (just a log in box). I'd like to download a song or two but seems you have to be a member and ...

Half-Japanese is one of my favorite bands, too. Finally got to see Jad in '91 in Olympia, Washington.

If you click on Sign In next to the log in box then you'll get a pop-up asking you to put in your email address as the first step in registering. The next box will ask you for name, location, etc.

Thanks. It works. I'm pretty sure I got that screen last time too but if you put in your email address and just hit return, nothing happens. You have to actually click the submit button instead of just hitting return. It bugs me when people build their website like that because then I have to take my hands off the keyboard and I'm too lazy for that, ha!

Downloading music as we speak. Thanks for the tip.

Pitchfork Review of Cansei De Ser Sexy
Conceptually, it's hard to be mad at CSS. They're young and pretty and fun and Brazilian! They play damaged, high-strung new wave with electro squiggles and winky self-aware lyrics about fucking and dancing!..So CSS should be great, right? Well, that depends. How much did you like that first Bis album? Because that's pretty much what you're getting here...more...

Independent: Crazy name, crazy band
..."That was a great audience," she says. "England is a good place for us, I think. They were crazy. In Sao Paulo there are rock bands, but people are so poor they don't want to pay to get into the show, so the scene doesn't grow. Clubbing is the main thing. And parties. Everyone used to come to our parties," she smiles wickedly, "and stay until 6am. We never made any money - we drank all the money we made"...

Would one expect otherwise from a guy who named himself after Morning Musume? ;)
