Picking up an English Job w/o a work visa

Postby aljones15 » Tue Oct 11, 2005 9:02 pm

Hey Folks,

My Korean employer gave me 2 weeks notice today
and I'm out and about starting November 1st. Wondering
what's the job situation like in Japan for English Teaching.
I know that Schools just started so basically I'm fucked
when it comes to ALTs except for a bunch of positions with
Interac who seem to have already rejected me after asking
me to come to Tokyo to interview. Any companies you suggest
contacting? How likely am I with my Korean ESL experience
and my U.S. public schools experience to get a job? and how
quickly... I got about 2k to subsist on...

any recommendations for cheap as fuck hotels?

peace,
A

disregard this post unless you work for a school hiring.
read some of the other posts and it sounds like Japan rather sucks
when it comes to getting the visa. hopefully will get a job in Seoul
soon.

just out of curiosity how long would you have to live in japan to self sponsor a visa? a year? 3 months? etc?
seems like if you could find work freelance you could ok.

What about sharing the Kurils???

Also, is "Soviet Supreme" the Russian version of a "super supreme" :?:

I'm in Korea and I know a guy who was working in a hagwon and was having problems. He found a job through a Ministry of Education program designed to put a foreign teacher in every
middle school. He's always on about how happy he is with this job. So enquire because apparently they're looking for more.

yeah got an interview on saturday in Seoul for more money
and all that. It's the usual, if you got the visa they'll hire you.
wondering about getting a japanese one for next year but we'll see.
where are u located?

peace,
A

p.s. apparently Koreans don't like to hire people who have been "let go" so my boss told the new hogwon that I wasn't fired, but quit. kinda ridicilous really, but kinda true...

live in Bundang, work in Kangnam.
But from what that guy told me, the Ministry deal is much better than hagwons. Same money for much less work and better conditions.

what is a hagwon? Sounds awful!!

Onto your original question.
Getting a visa before coming to Japan is always the best way. But you could get lucky..

Check the archives as this is a question that has been asked many times before and there are lots of good responses on the subject.

School teachers are a dime a dozen in this country, so good luck getting your visa. There are lots of tricks on getting one and there is a whole section dedicated on this topic. Once you become one, NEVER EVER tell people that you teach English as your profession if you want to maintain your dignity.

Sadly, I was at gas panic last week and some girl asked me if I was working here as an English teacher. I was very insulted.

When I first got to Japan seven years ago I stayed at the New Koyo out near Minowa Station on the Hibiya line for two weeks. Here's the link:
http://www.newkoyo.jp/
Prices are identical to when I was there. I believe I negotiated a slight discount with the owner by paying for a full week upfront.

The neighborhood is right in the center of Tokyo's major homeless village but the accomodations are not bad at all at the hotel. The owner and his wife keep it all really clean.

A "hagwon" is a Private English School. You know...like ECC and alike.

Hell, if I could find one that would hire a forty-year-old fat, loud gaijin with no practical experience OR degree (my everlasting shame-I never gradjiated college) I'd be THRILLED and proud to teach English.

I kinda doubt anyone would want me though. So sad. :(

Dude. You just said you have a Japanese wife-. She can get you a "Pet License" aka spouse visa that allows you to work here----no degree is required.

If only. My wife is fluent in Japanese, but is as white as I am. The only way she'll consider moving to Japan is if I'm employable. Which I am, sad to say, eminently not.

Maybe I should look up my friend in Osaka...

Holy crap, Bruce are you my twin?(Lol) Seriously, I'm almost in the same boat you're in , but as Taro has mentioned, you can get a spousal visa.(I'm too ugly for the J-girls to show interest. LOL)

Yeah I know AO. I'm just goodnaturedly taking a poke at Taro since he seems to like using the term anime freak-a-zoid a lot.

Nothing wrong with anime and manga, but after the massive doses I've been exposed to, it seems I don't just like anime and manga]http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c156/EnpitsunoDorei/Animetedtwo.jpg[/IMG]

The "w/o a work visa" part of the title of this thread reminds me of the bloke from Indonesia who lived in the same gaijin house I was living in who disappeared for a few days, only to show up hancuffed in the back of a cop car - he was on a tourist visa as it turned out and the factory in which he was working was raided.
