Podcasters Prepare to Launch Video Era
http://edition.cnn.com/2005/TECH/10/14/spark.podcast.reut/index.html
..The current crop of audio podcasters also includes entrepreneurial-minded Web journalists, some of whom are struggling to find a workable business model.

Media analyst Rafat Ali, whose paidcontent.org Web site focuses on the economics of digital content, forecasts many such start-up projects will fail due to lack of expertise and funding.

"Producing interesting video content is really hard," he said.

Success will depend largely on programmers' resources and ability to grasp the complexities of a medium that is much more complicated than audio, Ali said.

"It's a matter of how good is the quality and how do they get funded," he added.
Yeah, interesting video content is more 'challenging' to produce than audio. (I'm speaking of the 'talk show' format, not music).. I don't see a lot of money potential yet.. for the amatuer, that is.. Porn is the only way.. the truth and light.. he. he..

Yeah, Baby!

TokyoDV now has a Video Podcast Channel!.. I'm slowly converting TDV videos to iPod capable, but I have 4 done so far:

Yakuza Minister
Fertility Festival
Sony Robot
Honda Robot

They look pretty damn good, and I love the 'scalability'.. Not sure about what they look like on the iPod as I don't have one. Anyone with a video iPod and some free time, I'd love some feedback..

If you're bored and want to check out some videos within iTunes, just click on the link below:
pcast://www.tokyodv.com/iPodVideos/TDVVideoFeed.xml

What it looks like..

The Video iPod which claims to use MPEG-4 seems to needs something that's QuickTime 7 only + MPEG4. Those vPodcasts in mpeg4 won't play on my RCA Lyra Audio/Video player that plays MPEG-4-Advanced format using the open DivX codec.

The farkquing MPEG4 "standards" are never standard. Meh.

I have the similar problems playing digital files on my RCA Victrola Audio Player.

Get's PAID

Postby mr. sparkle » Mon Oct 17, 2005 5:52 am

Dude, you are so bleeding edge. Gotta LOVE that TDV Vpodcast. Nice going. Pongi's blowing it if he doesn't jump on the bandwagon soon. All we need is a way to get PAID.

I got the info from a bunch of different places on the Net, along with trial and error..

The first step is re-encoding the videos into the iPod compatible codec (link earlier in the thread).. After that, make an iTunes compatible RSS feed, and that's it..

What I have now though, isn't perfect. The banner doesn't auto-subscribe in Windows.. Still working out the kinks.

Well, that's just the way I see it and I hope I'm wrong, but at this point I seriously doubt it. Let's wait and see.
Yeah, you're probably right.. But people said the same thing about the original iPod. ;)

I think the value of the new 'scalable' codec and video capable iTunes/iPod will be utilized by families; My family can now subscribe to my personal video podcast, download the video, and watch it full screen on their TV.. Not that I'm going to do that, but plenty of sheeple will. ;)

Actually, I think the new remote iMac was bigger news than the new eyePod. But they also go well together.. Video conferencing could also be huge for Apple. My company saves a mint by video conferencing rather than travelling. The fat Americans don't have to catch SARS, bird flu, or coodies from the dirty foreigners either. ;)

Do at least what GJ has done.

Postby mr. sparkle » Tue Oct 18, 2005 6:41 pm

Rob,
As I said in another post: if Apple does not provide the model to get paid, someone will. Check out:

http://www.klicktab.com/

So don't worry. There WILL be a model to get paid. Eventually.

Rob Pongi wrote:I have over 90 videos now on RobPongi.com and I do not have the time to reencode them all over again and, at the same time, keep pumping out more for the already HUGE audience that I've built on the web.

With modern versions of Compressor, you can batch process the recoding of your material. Just set up a cue. With the latest version of Compressor and Qmaster, you can use all your Macs in "render farm" environment.

Rob, all I'm sayin' is if you can embed a flash button and upload a few vids as GJ has already done, you can drive even more unsuspecting fiends to http://www.robpongi.com. And that's what you want right? :?:

My advice? Do at least what GJ has done. Encode a few vids for iTunes and see what happens. Might actually be fun!

It was.. But I had some spare time and curiosity to play with.. Making money would be fun too, though.. ;) But would it?....

I once read about a guy who loved to play tennis everyday; for sport and exhileration. One day, a college proffesor approached him and offered to pay him 10 bucks a day to play tennis. The pay increased every month until it was 100 bucks a day. Then, 1 year into the experiment, the proffesor stopped paying.. And the guy stopped playing tennis...

Actually, I'm not sure if I read that.. Maybe I was stoned and dreamt it.. Moral of the story: don't talk to proffesors. ;)

Gets Web Design

Postby mr. sparkle » Wed Oct 19, 2005 5:55 am

Rob,
I am NOT telling you what to do....but you might want to take a break from the editing and give your site a complete tune up. I don't know if HTML 4 is necessary, but--

Image

There ya go and there y'are....

You might want to try out Dreamweaver if you have not already. If you know a little HTML, this program is easy to use to make nice looking pages with. If you don't know HTML and don't have the time to go through a Dummies book, may I suggest http://www.webmonkey.com? They have a cool cheat sheet up there. I hoisted fcpworld pretty quickly using the cheat sheet.

Ars Technica has up a review of the new iPod video, including a good look at the guts of the player:

http://arstechnica.com/reviews/hardware/video-ipod.ars/1

Worth a read. I was surprised to see that it doesn't even come with a Dock anymore! Also the bundled case is disappointing at best.

Don't care about the dock. You can buy one of those. Don't care about the case. You can buy one of those. No FireWire? Well, that sucks. You can't buy that. :?

Whoa! iTunes accepted my submission for the TokyoDV Vdeo Podcasts!
General search page:

And the TokyoDV iTunes page:

This is both a blessing and a curse; it might end up spanking my server's bandwidth.. Of course, not many people will be searching 'tokyodv' in iTunes.. Yet. ;)

My battery life seems to be getting a tad short.
Does anyone know of any software that might tell me how much capacity is left on my 5G Video iPod and how it compares with the original capacity.

Coconut battery does such a thing for apple laptops, but not for iPods it seems.
Image

The warranty is either gone or nearly gone. (the Apple support rep said theyre estimate is that its 22 days out of warranty now, but that may be inaccurate and they can check up on it)
The guy I bought it from in November 06 said it was only 5 months old.
He said he works for the company that are making the games for the newer 5.5Gen and got a new one from his job and maybe the one he sold me was from them too?
Coconut identity says it was manufactured in Nov 05 and sold approx Dec 25th - but was never registered so...
I can try to get back in touch with the seller, but he has an email account specifically set up for selling things - that i guess he dosent check that often & he might not be bothered replying anyway.
