Asahi: Rooftop thrill ride in Roppongi under fire
Discount store Don Quijote has frayed the nerves of people who live and work in Tokyo's Roppongi district with a plan to build an amusement ride on the roof of its outlet. It created consternation because the Minato Ward store is open through the night until 7 a.m. An association comprising about 240 businesses in Roppongi petitioned the Minato Ward assembly in late September to protest the noise, commotion and possible accidents they fear the thrill ride will bring...The ride is scheduled to start up in mid-December atop the eight-story Don Quijote outlet in Roppongi 3-chome. It is built to swoosh 12 riders back and forth in a 52-meter U-shape...more...

Someone spilt beer all over my shoes one night in roppongi and i was able to nip over to Don-don-don..don-don-da-don.. and pick up a pair of socks n runners; sooo handy! (i think i spotted a ninja costume and some sharp gardening tools too - wouldve come in handy for retribution on the beer spiller)

Youd figure theyd only run the ride till a certain time, but its not as if many people actually live on that street..
Maths Problem:
Drink x Gaijin x Rollercoaster = ?

The sections of rollercoaster look like evil devil horns dont they?
If Tokyo or parts of it ever 'transform and roll out' - Roppongi will probably turn out to be a decepticon

That's what that thing is! I was wondering.. Thought it was probably the makings of a 'jet-coaster', but then thought, 'Who would feel safe riding a Don Quijote jet-coaster?'... Well, people drinking in Roppongi!! :D

Probably more fun to watch the janitorial staff around Roppongi Hills trying to clean up the "splats" as it tosses riders down the hill! Better duck for incoming GJ!

No link, but Donki has announced that the opening of this ride has been "postponed". It was due to open on the 21st of this month. The company says that there are no structural or licence problems and that the postponement is a "business decision". The suspicion is that they may have given in to pressure from local residents and businesses who have been vehemently opposed to it. It is unclear when the ride might open.

Following their decision not to pursue the roof-top half-pipe scheme, Don Quijote have just opened a new cosplay outfit floor in their Roppongi store. This follows the opening of similar departments in Yokohama and Akihabara, the latter remains the largest with around 1400 different designs. Reflecting the culture of the area, the Roppongi store includes a wide selection of bondage oufits. Also, the company is keen to accomodate their FG clientele by stocking a selection of larger sizes and also bringing in the overseas brand Leg Avenue.

Hmm ok so Don Quijote opened in Yokohama a few weeks ago. Went there last week and bought myself a metal flask(for keeping drinks hot). It was only 500yen so i wasn't expecting much. So i opened the box and i noticed it had a dint in the metal - fine maybe they were seconds. I unscrewed the lid to wash the thing out and smelt coffee really strongly. I looked in the flask and there was some cold, old coffee in it. ewwww that is totally gross. Ok i bought a new product - jesus even a second hand one would be washed out.
I know this outfit is pretty dodgy, but isnt that just a bit much?

Was this a thermos or a flask? If it's a flask, you're keeping the party going 24/7!

Thermos and flask mean the same to me - we just say flask.

This guy has a set of photos on flickr of the new donki store in Hawaii. Its a bit different in their selection (I don't know if I would want to buy fresh fish at Donki) but you clearly recognize the Donki style...although I would hope they do something to match the rather unusual donki signage one usually finds randomly in Japanese stores, such as the Donki Penquin in dressed as Hard Gay on shelf price tag for shampoo.

bigger aisles though - less of a firetrap. Wonder if they have the blaring music/noise pollution.

Just a question - do you think places like Bic Camera and Don Quixote blare that noise to get people in or to make sure they don't stay too long? It is real noise pollution.

The noise pollution sure gets me out of places like that lickety-split. Seriously, how does the staff keep from going absolutely batshit listening to the same jingle what must be thousands of times a shift?

Life prison term upheld for woman who started fatal fires at discount stores in Saitama
Mainichi
A high court on Thursday upheld a life prison term handed down on a woman for setting fire to four discount stores in Saitama in 2004, killing three people.

The Tokyo High Court dismissed an appeal filed by Noriko Watanabe, 50, against the sentence handed down on her by the Saitama District Court in March 2007.

The appeal court rejected the defense counsel's request that her prison term be reduced because she was suffering from slight dementia at the time of the incidents and cannot be held fully responsible for her crimes.

"The defendant can be held fully responsible for the crimes," Presiding Judge Toshio Nagai said as he handed down the ruling. "She committed the arson attacks to vent her frustration with not being able to meet her boyfriend. There is no room for leniency."

Watanabe set fire to seven locations at four outlets of the Don Quijote discount store in Saitama between Dec. 13 and 15, 2004, burning three employees to death, according to the ruling. She was also found guilty of stealing approximately 600,000 yen worth of goods from the four outlets.
